Hi, In the past UA has used the 777/747 on LAX-SFO-LAX, and I wonder if anyone know when they intend to do this again? Can one really know far ahead? Because I am planning on taking a day trip to SFO from LAX with UA, and I would love to catch one of those birds. Anyone know if they will use the 777/747 in April?

This generaly occurs when 1) A 744 needs to be positioned to/from LAX (eg for the upcoming Air Pacific flying again), or 2) When SFO has poor weather and the flights up and down the coast get severly delayed/cxld to aid in clearing passenger backlogs.
From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California

Oh, so you cant really plan your flight dates then. All depends on luck.

Every so often, UA schedules a larger bird on the corridor, so you can plan in advance. But it is rare, and usually is for just a few weeks.
In the past year, I remember scheduled 3 cabin 767's as well as 757's (PS version) on the route, once daily, and again, only for a 3-4 week window of time.

ya, i've been on both the 747/777 on the SFO-LAX leg. its usually a re-positioning flight. i flew on the 747 a few months ago when the east coast was hit with a massive winter storm, so they used a 747 to make up for the delayed flights and stranded passengers, but this is very rare. i think that day they had 2 flights that used 747's! quite nice to sit in first class suites for a 1 hour flight!
and the other time on the 777, it was just a re-positioning flight. that flight was booked with 15seas IIRC.

Do you know if they have scheduled anything for the first two weeks in April?

On 13 & 17 April it's interesting to note, there are only 4 scheduled 737 on LAX-SFO route (3-733 & 1-735.) . I was surprised to see so many 752s on the schedule: 7. 319-4, 320-1. I would have thought they would utilize mainly 319/320s do to the length of the flight and the number of frequencies.

Spotted two UA 744s departing in a row this morning from LAX. First was indeed a LAX-SFO repositioning flight (UA9929). Second was daily LAX - NRT (UA891).

Would a 744 departing from 1L or 1R at SFO (can't remember which exactly) and then making a sharp turn right to the south have been heading to LAX? That was on Oct 14th if so
