Rather belatedly Airport Coordination Ltd (ACL) (who issue slots and control their use at LHR and other major British airports) have published their analysis of Air Transport Movements (ATMs) at LHR for the current Winter Schedules.

Their figures are for what they describe as "a typical week pre cancellations". These "cancellations" are almost certainly the cancelled flights on certain routes on certain days of the week in specific periods made by airlines in order to reduce their capacity in response to the credit crunch. It therefore seems that this year's data can be compared directly with that for previous years.

I also thought it would be instructive to compare the data for 2008-09 not just with that of last winter but also with ACL's data for Winter 2002-03 to show any longer term trends

The first question to answer is "Is LHR Totally Slot Bound?"

In 2002-03 there were 9,092 weekly air transport movements. This increased to 9,259 (+1.8 per cent) in 2007-08 and to 9,280 (+2.1 per cent or a further 0.3%) in 2008-09. So the answer appears to be almost but not quite. However the still available slots are generally at the least wanted times (like early on Sunday morning).

The next question is have there been any changews in the ranking list of airlines measured by the number of flights operated?

The only change in the last year amongst the top thirteen airlines for which ACL has published data is that AA has moved from 8th position in 2007-08 to 7th in 2008-09 swapping positions with IB. AA have increased their number of weekly ATMs by 18 from 194 to 212 while the number operated by IB declined from 210 to 196 almost certainly because of transfer of holiday routes to Clickair.

There have been more changes over the six year horizon. In 2002-03 the 4th largest operator at LHR was SK with 294 weekly ATMs. This number has declined to 274 this winter relegating them to 6th largest airline at LHR. VS moved from 6th to 4th as a result of growing their number of ATMs from 227 to 326 although they actually have 14 fewer ATMs this winter than they had last year. EI retained fifth position in all three years as their number of ATMs grew from 260 (2002-03) to 276 (2007-08) and then remained level (2008-09).

Other highlights are:

AF had 186 ATMs at LHR in 2002-03 but that number has declined to 154 wwkly flights in 2008-09 with 6 of that decline in the last year.

AZ ATMs have fallen from 182 (2002-03) to 176 in 2007-08 and to 134 in 2008-09.

LH retain third position with 416 ATMs in both 2007-08 and 2008-09 having had 420 in 2002-03.

Similarly KL retained their position as 9th largest LHR operator in all three years although their number of LHR ATMs has declined from 192 (2002-03) to 178 in 2008-09 with all but 2 of this reduction being in the last year.

So here is the current listing (2008-09) with the airline, its number of ATMs and its percentage of all LHR Winter Schedule ATMs:

BA 3,908 42.1%
BD 1,139 11.8%
LH 416 4.5%
VS 326 3.5%
EI 276 3.0%
SK 274 3.0%
AA 212 2.3%
IB 196 2.1%
KL 178 1.9%
AF 154 1.7%
AZ 134 1.4%
AC 126 1.4%
UA 126 1.4%
