Slovak airline "VIP Air s.r.o." (in future "VIP Wings s.r.o.") will start with scheduled services under the name of "Danube Wings" with summer schedule 2009.

End of March Danube Wings (Code V5) will start services from Bratislava BTS to Kosice KSC, Poprad/Tatry TAT, Bologna BLQ and Basel BSL.
As of June additional (seasonal services) will commence to Dubrovnik DBV and Split SPU.

V5 will operate the flights with 2 ATR72-200 aircraft (OM-VRA and OM-VRB) with 70 seats.
The route BTS-KSC will be in direct competition with Skyeurope/NE.

Fares start from EUR 33,-- and include free baggage (1 pce at 15kgs) whereas NE charges for each checked bag.

Homepage of Danubewings including photos of the aircraft.

Good to see a new airline starting in the pretty problemous times the airtransport industry is facing.

I think they would have more success if they used Vienna instead of Bratislava. Now it is quite difficult to connect to Poprad or Kosice but this new airline will be no help in this regard because there are few flights to Bratislava from regular airlines.

I can't wait to try them on the BTS-KSC route, although at the same time I think that it's probably competition that Sky Europe could do without at the moment! I love to fly Sky Europe but at the same time I will try any competitor on the route & especially another Slovakian airline (lets face it there aren't many Slovakian airlines about!). It will be interesting to see what their fares & flight times are like compared to Sky Europe! It seems to me that Danube Wings are more geared up towards the business traveller where as Sky Europe have a mixture of business & leasure passengers.

This is all well & good but it depends on how much they will charge for excess baggage over the free 15kgs(Sky Europe charge you but allow up to 20kgs!).

I think these flights are mainly aimed at Slokavkian businessmen/women linking Kosice & Poprad with their capital & main business centre Bratislava, therefore Vienna would be of less use!
If you put all the Sky Europe & Ryanair destinations together I think you'll find that Bratislava is linked to more places than you realise!
I do hope that they are sucessfull, the only other transport links from Kosice & Poprad are either a long drive or a long rail journey!
If Sky Europe dont make it through their present problems (which I sincerely hope they do!) at least Kosice which is Slovakia's 2nd largest city will still have a scheduled airlink to it's capital!

I sent Danube Wings an email asking whether they would be interested in me writing an article about them. I covered the launch of Firefly in Malaysia and my articles and pictures were published in five different places. Let's see if their PR Department (if they have one at least) will make use of the opportunity.

That was my first thought too though I found the first destinations a little strange. Second thought was "there must be some economical or even company focussed tie between the planned citypairs" by choosing BLQ and BSL getting connected both to TAT and BTS.

Seasonal routes to DBV and SPU are no doubt leisure travel.

SkyEurope NE - for me the business travellers will be lost soon when they do not restart with a normal schedule. Having cut back cities like Amsterdam or Paris to one flight a day it is not of interest for the business traveller anymore.

especially the UK with up to 10 flights a day UK to BTS - half of the passengers being "party people" as it seems - Bratislava is even promoting themselves in the UK as "Partyslava".
