United Yanks Seatback Video Screens... Why?

Does anyone know why United now has 777s with no seatback video screens. They now have monitors bolted to the ceiling on these planes. When the 777 first came out, both UA and Boeing promoted it as offering new passanger ammenities including individual seatback videos and a choice of movies/videos in flight. Why would they back away from this now??? Sounds like a bait-and-switch to me.

Real big hint for ya: take a look at the date...1998.

United pulled the PTV's off their planes because of reliability issues with GEC Marconi after the aircraft came out in 1995. Then, United replaced the GEC models with BAE PTV's...no more problems. Currently, almost every UA777 is equipped with PTV's in each seat, with the exception of the 350-seat Domestic version, as well as a few of the International "B" models which are to be converted shortly. Not quite the bait and switch.

That's basically it. Also, PTV's are a pain in the rear end when it comes to maintenence. To fix a PTV (and there is usually one broken one on every flight, you need to rip out the entire seat. Not exactly pleasant, plus it keeps the aircraft out of service more often than it should need to.

That would be the reason why every airline in the world hasn't suddenly jumped on the PTV bandwagon. Maintenence issues made it cost-prohibitive for many airlines to offer it. Finnair just did a D-check on it's first MD-11 (the first D-check carried out on an MD-11 ever) and they put in new Y-class seats with those winged headrests and improved entertainment controls, but no PTV's.

Personally, I don't mind. I spend more time looking out the windows anyways. That's MY PTV Big grin

Yeah I was shocked when I flew SFO-IAD-SFO a couple years ago with my class... on the way there we got a treat.... new 763 with PTVs in Star Alliance C/S....... on the way back we were on a 777..... and imagine my surprise when I found no PTVs!!! Strange.... was this the domestic version? or just one of the intl versions not yet converted? Anyway...... I got lucky on that flight.... managed to con my way in to switching boarding passes with a friend who was in the middle-middle seat...... imagine HIS surprise when he got to his seat.....

The real reason is that United marketing surveys showed that passengers in their Gulag Class were actually enjoying the PTVs. They were ripped out immediately.

I understand now Gulag Plus passengers get the PTVs but only if they whimper and whine and pay off a CSR.

Want to know something that's worse?

My brother-in-law's 777 flight from ORD-AMS on March 8th/9th had PTVs, but the whole system wasn't working! Imagine having to stare at a non-functional PTV the whole flight.

Oh, and it gets worse. His return flight on March 13th had the same problem! It was probably the same aircraft. Oh is he pissed though! Even though they arranged to have a $40 voucher sent to him, he swears he'll avoid UA whenever he can from now on. I don't agree with that myself, these things do happen, but I sure would be angry though.

Finnair didn't put PTVs on their MD11s because the SR111 crash might have been caused by the PTVs (which SR removed shortly after the crash).

I wouldn't fly UA anyways. They're always delayed and loose your bags. I just take Delta, never had a problem yet. Or Midwest Express.

Always delayed? Well during the summer from hell...YES, but reciently, most flights have been departing on time.

Always loose your bags? How many times have you actually had your luggage lost by United? The truth of the matter is that sooner or later Delta will loose your bags too.

I guess you are missing out

The PTVs at any airline have there problems. The whole system in general is not the most reliable...even at Delta, American, Continental, Air France and so on.

I am sorry about that. Usually the PTV's work, but not always...and for that I am sorry.

If you ask me, they should have kept the overhead T.V.s in addition to the PTV's so you wont have 200 angry passengers.

Why would one get angry just because their PTV isn't working? Do they think of themselves as kids?

The only time I ever lost luggage as a paying revenue passenger was on United. I flew PHX-DEN-RAP in the summer of '96 and they lost both of my bags...they never made it out of Denver. They were delivered a day later, however, at no charge to me. On the return flight, only one bag got left in Denver. It too was delivered a day later. That is the only time I've ever had trouble with my bags on any airline. On a positive note, the PHX-DEN segment was on a DC10 and it was cool to listen to the pilots through the IFE.

I really don't remember the exact date. But it was witin 2 weeks of todays date 2 years ago... (I only remember because it was right after spring break). And If it didn't have business class, would this mean that it was the 350 seat domestic version? To be honest I really can't remember if there was a business class or not though...
