It is with deep regret that we announce that the head of the site, Paulo Emanuele, was killed in a plane crash here in Santa Monica just a short while ago.

From an executive at DM:

" ... Dear Airliners Crew,

It is with the deepest sorrow that I let you know Paulo died this evening in a tragic plane crash. His plane took off out of Santa Monica Airport at 5:00 PM and lost power. Paulo attempted to return to the airport, but the plane crashed on the runway. This is all we know at this time, as I hear more I will let you all know. I know many of you were dear friends with Paulo.

Paulo loved Airliners and everything it stood for.

Paulo was an amazing Pilot, an amazing photographer, an amazing friend, and an amazing father.

He will be deeply missed ... "

Feels like I've been kicked in the guts.

Sleep well, Paulo - you served so many in the finest tradition. Greatest of respect for your numerous accomplishments, and sincerest condolences to family and friends of those left behind.

You have indeed slipped the surly bonds of earth, and must be dancing the skies atop your laughter-silvered wings, Paulo.

Wow... what can be said?

While this site may just be a little corner of the internet, it's served as a great place for so many of us to share in something we all love, and that will continue after he's gone. Most people wish they could have something like that as part of their legacy. Those of us who didn't know him personally are at least grateful for that.

To die doing something he loved may be a small mercy to those who knew him, but I'm sure many of us wouldn't wish it to have been any other way.

My heart goes out to his friends and family.
