My brother is booked on a flight ORD-NYC on Monday and it says he will be on an "Airbus Special Jet"...

Is that an ex-TED A320 unconverted? Although looking at the schedule it seems like all of the Airbii are A319...

Or is the equivalent of a "short bus"...pun intended...if you knew my brother, you would understand...

Well I found out it is UA 670 ORD-LGA which is listed is an A319...so it isn't an ex-TED....why is United calling it an "Airbus Special Jet"?

Where are you seeing this?

Both united.com and flightaware are just showing an A319 for Feb 2.

I flew out of LGA on UA last night. The LGA-ORD (7pm ish) flight was a Ted aircraft. I overheard a bunch of premier members complaining about the lack of F

UA is in the process of reconfiguring all ex-TED configs back to mainline with 6 extra Economy Plus seating. New seating configs on ex-TED's will be 12F/132Y.

Well, yeah but from what website? There are many different websites that sell airline tickets...

He sent me the itinerary and seems as though it is the travel agent's designation, not United...

As a Premier exec who flies Business Internationally I could not stand the Ted jets and getting rid of them is the best thing they could ever do. I live in Chicago but I sometimes find myself in Las Vegas or Phoenix and I need to go straight to Europe or Asia. Buying an International Business class ticket and having to spend time on LAS-IAD or PHX-ORD is very unpleasant, especially when given what you have paid for the ticket they won't even give you an entire can of soda!

I think it may be because the e/q has one extra class, and not just two. On 757s on UAL.com sometimes it says special because of the three classes, because it normally is just first and coach. It says special on I believe LAX-JFK or ORD-JFk.

I totally agree with you. I used to live in Phoenix, and had family in The Northern Virginia area, just close to IAD. On many occasions when i am returning to Dubai for vacation i would plan my itinerary as multi city, so that i leave PHX stop in IAD and continue to DXB few days later. Now what annoyed me most is when I want to leave from PHX straight to DXB, i would pay a full fare business class ticket, but then some choices will be stopping in ORD, all the flights from PHX to ORD are TED. This also implies on DEN and SFO. A lot of times I asked my self why is it that i have to pay a full fare ticket when i will be stuck in economy for one segment that elapses for 4 hours + ! United has done the mistake of having a lot of destinations in the western part of the USA as TED only destinations. It could have worked better for a lot of their frequent fliers if they kept at least one mainline flight to those destinations.

PHX - i miss spotting

To answer OP's question, I think this is designation by some Sabre systems. If you look at Travelocity you will see "Airbus Jet' for all narrow and wide body Airbuses.

I'm booked on a Lufthansa 'Airbus Special Jet' on a MAD-FRA flight.
In another overview of my itinerary it shows up as an A319.
