Well for the second time in my 10 years working at BNA I saw the ramp area packed with FedEx MEM diverts because of weather. I guess around mid-night they started showing up and was told the grand total was between 19-22. The FedEx ramp was packed along with the taxiways around the cargo ramp and Embraer, Actually saw mostly widebodys....MD-11's A300's, DC-10's... I felt sorry for the crews being stuck on the planes for all those hours

We kinda chuckled too. We were waiting on a few parts for an airplane and laughed that they were out there on the ramp sitting diverted, then later flown to MEM and back to BNA.

J- Just put yourself on the rotation to come on down. I'm not sure what they did with some of the crews. Some were sitting out there 7-8 hours

If this is only the second time in 10 years you've seen something like this, it speaks well to FedEx's choice of Memphis for their main hub.

Interesting, though, and thanks for sharing the info.

John

The second time with this much volume. Several times a year we'll get diverts because of thunderstorms or other weather in MEM. They normally stay for an hour or so then leave. This time they were here for hours....

Yeah, I'd say t-storms are much more an issue in Memphis than ice or snow. I worked at the Superhub in the mid-1980s for a single summer, and out of the 6 days a week I worked all summer, we had one major delay incident, which was of course a Memphis thunderstorm. As I recall, it didn't particularly affect air operations, but workers weren't allowed on the ramp while active lightning was in the area so the planes just sat out there with full containers waiting to be sorted. My job was primary sort on Overnight Letters, and I sat on my rear with the rest of my team for about four hours waiting for the storm to blow over. It was a long night, and I got some juicy overtime pay for that stint as the packages still had to be sorted once they could be retrieved from the planes.
