Nothing serious but an incovenience that LHR could probably have done without today after the delays due to the heavy snowfall over the past day. Incident is regarding a Cyprus Airways A330 that was taxiing to Terminal 1. The front wheel came of the taxiway and is stuck in the grass.

"A plane has slipped off a taxiway at Heathrow Airport, lodging its front wheel in a grassy area.

Snow and ice are being blamed for the incident which happened when the Cyprus Airways flight 332 landed at 0820 GMT and was moving to Terminal 1.

Heathrow's operator, BAA, said passengers were unharmed and were evacuated from the aircraft.

A BAA spokesperson said the front wheel of the plane had landed in the grass area and was being removed.

The aeroplane was the last flight to land before both the runways at the airport were closed due to snow earlier on Monday, however the southern runway has since reopened. "

Yes it was discussed briefly on the bad weather thread. Was not serious. Aircraft was 5B-DBS named Ammochostos delivered Dec 2002.

There was video footage on the Greek news tonight.

Quoting Sebjacques92 (Thread starter):
passengers were unharmed and were evacuated

"Evacuated" sounds a bit dramatic in this case... IMHO of course.

Does anyone know whether or not it actually "slid off" as the media describes? (i.e. a skid) Or is it more likely to be a case of the pilots failing to navigate the taxiway due to the snow concealing the asphalt?

According to the news I saw, he slipped off the edge of the taxiway because it was snow covered and couldn't see any marking.

Bit stupid really could of been avoided if he had requested escort to gate.

"Evacuated"

Yes a bit OTT. They were disembarked not evacuated.

How would an escort vehicle, which in all probability would not have been able to identify the centre of the taxiway, have helped ?

So what happened at the end? Any A32S subbing for Ammochostos? I think this A330 is now back online, right? Any delays, or major schedule disruptions or is it a really quiet time of the year for CY, enough to cope with one A330 out?

Thanks.
