Cool. Expected. They need to replace 1/2 of their 744 fleet with A380s, so 10 is a solid number. Maybe a couple more over time, though they might take more 77Ws instead.

This is good news amidst the bad economy. I'm also starting to grow fond of their livery.

When are they expected to receive their first one? I heard it might be used on one of the LAX-ICN frequencies.

Airbus now needs only 6 to meet this year's target, hopefully they'll fulfill that soon.

Air Austral already placed order of 2 earlier this year.

Well, that was an MoU so not yet a firm order. The Korean statement appears to be firm. Hence it would be the first of 2009. But I could be wrong.

And who would have guessed that the first two widebody commitments of 2009 would be for the A380?  wideeyed

True.

And that the first widebody announcement would be -15 787s?

That's another nice little top up Big grin

I wonder if these little orders have been included in the suggested target of 10 for the year (or will NH or similar order 10 in one go?)

Forgot to add - if these are firm we might have the whacky situation of Airbus only selling A380s in Jan this year. I can't remember any other firm order announcements.

I would have thought that the first wide-body order for 2009 was actually from FedEx for the 772F. Or is that order just a MOU ?

Yes you're correct, it was MoU signed on Jan 15th. For KE, Reuters said KE would buy, I guess it's not formally signed either. So the first one should be S7's -15 787.

As was posted on a differant thread, and we've all missed - if this is firm then the A380 has broken 200 orders!

We just need the Groupo Marsans order to get firmed now......

According to Flightglobal the KE commitment is an order:

"The SkyTeam Alliance carrier says in a statement today it has ordered two more A380s and one will be delivered in May 2014 and the other in June of that year."

Given Air Austral's was only a MoU, and it's already February, we might as well have no order at all in Jan for Airbus. Did Boeing announce anything?

WARNING! The post above should be taken with a grain of salt! Furthermore, it may be slightly biased towards A.

" SEATTLE, Jan. 12, 2009 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] is proud that FedEx has decided to exercise options to purchase 15 additional Boeing 777 Freighters. The options are part of the carrier's original 15-airplane 777 Freighter order from 2006.

Boeing will post the new airplanes to the Boeing Commercial Airplanes orders and deliveries Web site when all contingencies are removed. "

So, still contingent.

They've booked 5 737s for Southwest, 13 737s for UFO air and the -15 787s for S7.

In 2006 Airbus didn't sell any widebodies until March (not counting 4 x original A350s for ILFC).

In the same year Boeing didn't sell any widebodies till the last day of February when they announced 1 x 767 (with PW) and 2 x 747 (with RR).

So two months into the year RR had 67% of the widebody market, PW 33% and GE 0%. Oh happy days...  Big grin
