I received an email from Delta the other day informing customers that all of DL's LAX flights from JFK were to be moved to T4 from their current T2/T3 location. Does anybody know DL's motive behind this? Are they preparing to offer some kind of premium airport experience to LAX customers? Or is it just a merger-related move? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, apparently DL has come to an agreement with PANYNJ where they will take the six gates on the B concourse of Terminal 4 that face terminal 3.

Does DL have check-in desks at T4? I assume that if they don't they will just use NW's unless they chose to force all PAX to check-in at T2/T3 and then walk to T4 which I doubt will happen.

I'm pretty sure that all gates at T4 are common use gates so I don't think these gates will be used by DL only.

Quoting CokePopper (Reply 2): more destinations to be added. Not just LAX.
I believe flights to PRG and the Middle East will also be departing from Terminal 4.

Gate B22 is Delta only gate and when we get the other 3 they will also be Delta only gates. The rest of the terminal will remain common use.
Yes we have check in desks at Terminal 4 and you will be able to check in for any Delta departure from this counter. There is a airside shuttle that goes between terminals 4 and gate 19 in terminal 3.

The LAX flights will be the first to use Terminal 4 (T4). As summer approaches, in addition to PRG and Middle East flights, DL will use T4 for LHR, NRT, AMS, and perhaps the Africa flying. Initial gates used will be B20, B22, and B24 with a check in counter in T4 and buses running from gate B23 in T4 to gate 11 in T3 and gate 19 in T2.

I believe when NW starts to operate ATH and VCE those cities will
be added. Also we are being told NRT will also operate out of T-4.

June 1 JFK-NRT, LHR, LOS and the NW flights of ATH and VCE will depart from terminal 4. This is in addition to all NW and KL flights from JFK. April 1 is the “official” opening of gates 20, 22 and 24 for Delta.
Middle East flight were origionally thought to depart out of 4 however, as of now, they
will stay at T-3 as they have built the extra security screenings at the gate. (TLV/CAI)

That's actually TLV and AMM that require the secondary screening

Well the NW ones because they are already established in terminal four where NW has been for quite sometime. Since the NW ground crew are the only ones as of now allowed to touch an NW plane there that would have a lot to do with it.

So anyone know if this shift in gates will help free up space in T2/T3 and help clear up the clusterf*%k at the end of T2 where DCI operates?

Also some of our arrivals are arriving into terminal 4. Specificaly the flights turning to LAX departures. The only steady one is the EZE arrival at 430 A.M.

NW opps are on T4A DL will be on T4B so this has nothing to do with it.

this is true but all DL has to do is move the NW ground crews over to T3

Yes, Buenos Aires flights have been using T4 also (they are discontinued, seasonally, next month). The plan is to use more T4 gates this summer, if possible.
Delta's situation at T3/T2 is desperate.
T3 was voted worst terminal in America in a survey I ran a few weeks ago for my weekly column.....
I keep hearing rumors that DL is going to take over ALL of T4. I find this hilarious, because nobody who espouses this theory can ever explain what would happen to the 40-plus airlines that currently reside there. Try to imagine the likes of Singapore, Emirates, Qatar, Virgin Atlantic, etc., accepting a move into the black hole of T3!

There has been talk (and was part of the 2000 plan) rebuild T3 and add to T2 and take over all of T4B.

I am honestly not a big fan of this plan. It is always so nice to go by Terminal 4 on the AirTrain and see the wide variety of foreign tails. PIA, AI and VS always seem to be there which is a nice change from the sea of tails that is DL.
Nothing in life is to be feared; it is only to be understood.

The plan does not involve DL taking over T4 entirely, what it entails is first the extension of the East concourse (closest to T5). When that is complete all the airlines currently operating out of the West concourse will move to the newly expanded East concourse, DL would then take over the West concourse entirely. If they also expand the concourse they could have as as 15-20 gates at T-4. Then they would work on the T-2, T-3 areas.
However in the current economic crisis we find our selves DL is not getting anything major going anytime soon, it's most likely they would go ahead with the Port Authority on moving forward with the expanded T-4 project but hold off on anything regarding T-2, T-3 or a new check in/baggage building.
Either way it's a small step in the right direction, however it could be 2020 by the time anything major is completed.
