Here's UA's profit and loss approximations for routes that were operated under the UA code by a reporting carrier and had more than 90 operations (45 round trips) during the quarter and was on supported equipment. Data from PAXstats.

The revenue included in the below analysis is passenger revenue only, and doesn't include revenue from cargo and other transport services. Therefore, some of the borderline markets are likely in the black... but this rank should be fairly solid.

Well I think it's now pretty obvious why UA is going to try MSP-SFO and why WN is starting MSP-CHI. MSP must rake in the money with their 18 flights with those margins. Also surprised to see that Hawaii made money even during the fuel crisis.

Don't forget NW. 31 flights a day MSP-ORD between the three airlines and all get around a 50% margin. Very impressive and it's no wonder both WN and FL at least tried it.

Note that the various threads have all been prepared in a similar fashion. This enables comparing of routes between carriers and over time. The algorithms used to derive the data are not the same as the carriers themselves. Every carrier allocates costs and revenues differently. There results here most definitely are somewhat different than what's on the internal books of the airlines. The approximations (note that the same word was used in the thread starter) however, are the best that we have at objectively viewing the routes. Sure, there will be some oddballs (I think that SEA-AUS is one of them) - but the results should generally make for valid comparisons.

About P2P RJ routes that look horrible - that's because they ARE horrible. There's not too much of way to argue around that. Most hub RJ flying, before adjustment (giving a preferred revenue position to the regional segments) performed equally horribly. With P2P routes, there's no way to give it such a position.

Interesting. You always hear about the Hawaii flights being "mileage sinks" for frequent flyers, but virtually all of them have a positive margin, and some of them (LAX-OGG) have very high margins.

Maybe Hawaii flying isn't the loss-maker that it has been perceived to be.

Yeah, I'm sure the decrease in capacity has helped the Hawaii flights profitability. Q3 is also usually a "weak" time to Hawaii, so those numbers may get better (although the economy may have something to say about that).

Not necessarily, it's really hard to compare airlines using this data simply because they all allocate revenue differently between the international and domestic portions of their network and even how they allocate cost/revenue between connecting passengers on domestic flights.
