Today in Santiago we celebrate one of the most important sucess the history of Latin American aviation: the 80 years of LAN.

“en El Bosque a cinco días del mes de marzo de mil novecientos veintinueve, yo, Carlos Ibañez del Campo, General de Brigada y Presidente la República, ante mis ministros y demás funcionarios que firman esta Acta, declaro inaugurada oficialmente la Línea Aeropostal Santiago-Arica”.

With these words, the President of Chile Carlos Ibañez del Campo declared the creation of the Línea Aeropostal Santiago - Arica named after Línea Aérea Nacional LAN

After the speech of the President and Arturo Merino Benítez the FACH Lieutenant Arturo Meneses went to the little cabin and started the engine of the smaller Gipsy Month N°9. After a taxi at 8:30 am the fragile Moth started its take off climbing in the middle of dust cloud. This first takeoff was the beginning of one of the largest airlines in the continent.

This first flight covered the route Santiago-Arica with stop in Ovalle and Potrerillos carried an small package of mail.

80 years later many things have changed, the Moth and its fragile wood cockpit was repalced by the modern Boeings and Airbuses and its latest-generation glass cockpit; ... the first flight was made without passenger, today 45.000 flies daily in a LAN plane around world; ...a single package that give way thousands of tons of cargo planes carrying LAN in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and soon; ... 80 years ago, a single route was covered, today LAN serves more than 60 destinations in the Americas, Europe and the Pacific, plus a couple cargo destinations in Africa and soon Asia, attended with different airlines that invite to know the charm of flying in Chile, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador; ...80 years ago was a only plane, today more 80 aircrafts fly across our skies.

These sucessfull 80 years reflects the work and effort of thousands of people and workers, from Arturo Merino Benitez to the current control group, since Lt. Meneses to put thousands of workers who do their best to lift each time to meet each flight and the passengers and customers with the highest quality making LAN a leading airline in the commercial aviation.

Happy Birthday LAN.

Agree,

My opinion, LAN is the best airline in operation from the top of Canada to the Southern tip of South America. They're the closest thing to Emirates, Cathay and Singapore this side of the Atlantic Ocean....

Congratulations to LAN and our Chilean friends, nice job on that airline.

Question: Why does CC-CPF have a different interior configuration than the rest of the A319 fleet?

Congrats to LAN, best airline serving south america by far!
Have one question thouhg, since when were these birds registered as Ecuadorian airplanes and why? I thought LAN Ecuador didn't need airplanes registered at Ecuador to fly. Any reason why now? And are these planes going to be used for some specific routes or will they fly all the routes LAN flies? Also, I read that 3 A318s were coming for domestic routes, and for those routes they would have to be indeed registered. However, you listed B767s, which makes me wonder why the type. I appreciate information about this.

Thanks!

With the delay in the 787 program and LAN flying the 777F soon is there anychance LAN might buy or lease 777'S for their passenger service?

I still remember their 60th anniversary back in 1989...

They just received their first 747, and lot of advertising showing their first aircraft vs. the 747.

Then, they started a teaser TV and press campaign: "This sunday watch the sky"... I thought the 747 was gonna fly low in Santiago, but it didn't... instead, there were a lot of little airplanes in Santiago's Skies, throwing little parachutes with a little box with a pin inside...

Great!

Since AeroGal and its policy agains LAN Ecuador prescense pushed to the Ecuatorian Authorities to change the requirements to renewal LAN Ecuador permissions. According of that LAN was forced to register and base LAN Ecuador airplanes in GYE.

For more info. about that you can check: http://envivodesdescl.blogspot.com/2...or-defiende-su-derecho-operar.html (Spansih only).

I enjoy every flight with them for almost 30 years now, and they always gave the same to me, a solid and consistent product.

Question for Ricardo : Do you have an estimate about the time of arrival for the first 777F to SCEL on April 18 ? ( i know its far away in the future, but at least can we know the scheduled time ? ) I will be flying from SCFA around that date and i will love to see the first landing of that beauty.

Thanks !!

According the schedule the N772LA will arrive into SCL early morning.

In other way, LAN is studying reduce some frequencies to North America and the Pacific considering the current situation of the air transport. At this moment SCL-LAX route would be suspended replace it by a daily SCL-LIM-LAX operated by an A340 and B763 aircraft. SCL-AKL-SYD will keep 6 xweek although is possible that LAN cut another one or two frequencies during the next months.

Any celebrations, TV adverts or events held to mark the event this time, like in 1989?

I am lucky to have found a copy of 'Airlines of Latin America since 1919' (R.E.G Davies, Putnam, 1984): chapter 26 has a nice history of Chilean airlines, and nice photos of the DH Moth. The chapter also mentions that 762 passengers were carried on the Arica route in the first year of operation.
