Anyone know more?

Kampala: A Ugandan radio station is reporting that a medium-size plane has crashed at the country's main airport.

Simba radio did not offer any word on casualties or say whether it was a cargo or a passenger flight. It did not report any flight number.

According to Allfrica.com - Apparently a South African registered cargo plane! Crashed into Lake Victoria just after take-off. No other details as yet! (I can't acess the web-site - requires a subscription)

Reports that seven are feared dead and that it was an Antonov.

Check

www.monitor.co.ug

and

www.newvision.co.ug

for updates in the hours to come. These are Kampala's two largest dailies, so they'll have a local version of the news if you're interested to read it.

There are lots of Soviet-era aircraft at EBB that support UN operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This one was headed for Mogadishu in support of Ugandan peacekeepers stationed in Somalia.

The dead include 3 members of the Burundi army

Current report including weather, which does not seem to be an issue.

According to ASN, the aircraft was operated by Aerolift, the same operator who lost an An-12 in Luxor on takeoff a few weeks ago.

R.I.P to all onboard...
ASN states the aircraft was chartered by DynaCorp, a company I worked for as a civilian in former Yugoslavia in 1994. Our main task was to evacuate refugees from the enclaves of Bosnia and Croatia. Guess they perform similar relief operations in Africa.
