My guess would be something to do with the World Baseball Classic; same as a couple of years ago -- dropping off Spring Training players from the Round 1 games in Japan perhaps?

Something isn't right. It says the duration is only 5h and 21m?
Based on the flight number, it looks like it's a charter. Could it be the Korean baseball team coming to play the National League West Champion Dodgers? They have an exhibition on 3/12....Which may also be Manny's first game of the Spring...

Well, all of the other information on the flight appears accurate. So, I made the assumption that the duration was accurate, as well; which is why I made the statement. I appreciate the condescending response, though.

Cool! Wish I could get out to the airport to see those land. Does anybody know when they will depart back to Japan? Depending on when that is I would like to try and see them take-off.

Quoting San747 (Reply 6): Is the WBC going to have a game at Petco Park again this year? Remember in 2006, it got SAN some very unique visitors... TACA, JAL, LAN...
I have no idea who might be flying in to SAN from where or when but it will be fun to see what shows up.
BTW, I would expect to hear about some other visitors to PHX in the week ahead as there have been first-round games in MEX, SJU, and YYZ -- and players will need to be returning to Cactus League locations. (I would assume the same thing happens in Florida for the Grapefruit League players...)

I doubt they would send charters for individual players. I don't think there is enough coming from a specific area to justify it. The only visitors I would expect are for National teams coming to play a Cactus league team as an exhibition prior to the 2nd round in SAN.

The other event that happened (last year, I think) was that the Padres (team) flew from Spring Training in Peoria (AZ) to Tokyo for a series of exhibition games and then returned to SAN; that accounted for many good 747 sightings at both Sky Harbor and Lindbergh! I don't think that's happening this year.

Well, if this is due to the World Baseball Classic then this is the best thing about that whole mess.

A bit more information for those interested.
I was just looking at the Spring Training schedule (at MLB) and see that on Wednesday, the Padres are playing Korea in Peoria (the Padres ST home field) and the Giants are playing Japan in Scottsdale (SF's home field); on Thursday, other games are scheduled.
I'll bet that the JAL is bringing both teams in from TYO (or some intermediate point) to PHX for these games, while they wait for the WBC Round 2 in San Diego (beginning 3/15.)
IF the JAL 747 stays in PHX with the teams, then I would expect it to be flying to SAN late Thursday or early Friday, carrying the 2 teams in to prepare at Petco.

Just saw it (10 minutes ago) fly over Camelback Mountain toward Scottsdale for eventual landing to the west at PHX. Thought it was BA, but not today and the red tail looked different. Now I know

There are actually (2) 747's inbound from JAL into PHX
JAL 8806 due to arrive at 5:46 PM PST
JAL 8808 due to arrive at 6:20 PM PST
Wonder how customs will handle this at T4 even with BA due in at 6:23 PM PST.
Cheers,

Every year again, JL is doing numerous charters for baseball teams and supporters, soccer teams, Japanese national soccer team, touroperators with dedicated trips etc.
e.g. this season, JL will also operate charters to ARN, BGO, ALA, DBV, PRG, BUD, ASP. In fall, most probably also charters to several Canadian airports.

They were really nice to watch come in. The light was gone when the second one came in. From what I hear from a friend at the airport this happens every year, but usually its just one 744. Got some good shots though.
