There's probably only a limited number of people with access to a particular area, no? So, I say interview all of them and someone will crack!

Ouch! This is a federal offense if it happens to aircraft, but I'm not sure about ground equipment...
The scary thing is that if you have access to the areas needed to cause this damage to line equipment, then you can probably get out on the ramp as well.
A flight club I was involved in years ago was party to an aircraft sabotage incident...we knew it was a local mechanic, who poured sand down the crankcase of a Contenintal O-300 engine in one of our birds (after we sent the engine off for overhaul because the mechanic in question did a crappy overhaul on it beforehand...). We never could pin it on the guy, but everyone knew, and he was a shady fellow
