From Avweb's newswire:

When a Delta MD-11 made a percautionary landing in remote Cold Bay, Alaska, late last month, the 289 stranded pax were treated like long-lost friends by the 69 local residents. Flight 79's strandees were tranpsorted by the local townspeople in the two local school buses and every available minivan to the Cold Bay School gymnasium, two local inns, local housing owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and some local homes. Once settled, the pax sampled the local cuisine (mostly salmon and biscuits, with some bacon for good measure) before returning to their scheduled journey. Now, Delta is showing its gratitude, with a $7,000 donation toward building a new two-way radio system for local emergency technicians, plus 50 cases of fresh fruits and vegetables -- scare on the tundra at this time of year -- and a bunch of Delta T-shirts for the kiddies. Unusual as this adventure may have been for the residents, it still fell far short of another potential possibility -- the 10,000-foot ex-WWII staging-strip is an alternate landing site for the Space Shuttle.

I think getting to see a Delta MD-11 is a pretty close second to seeing the a space shutte.

Bravo, Delta!

It looks like avweb is about a week behind the ball.

We talked about it earlier. I put my shot of the place up on the board, Delta Says thanks to Alaska Village
