Finnair increase flights on Helsinki-New York route during the coming summer to 10x weekly, creating connections between JFK and PEK, PVG, HKG, ICN, NGO, NRT, KIX and DEL via HEL. The new flights will also improve the connections with Finnair's European network, covering around 40 cities.

The new flights AY007/008 will get a MD-11 from their BOM route, suspended for the summer. The daily 005/006 will get a fresh new A333 in April, the A333's will replace all their MD-11's by next spring. Hopefully they will be able to continue their new JFK-Asia service in the future, despite the hard times...

The new 3x weekly service (MD-11):
HEL-JFK AY007: 17:10-18:50 (Wed, Fri, Sun 31 May-13 Sep)
JFK-HEL AY008: 22:40-13:50 (+1) (Wed, Fri, Sun 31 May-13 Sep)

Daily (A333):
HEL-JFK AY005: 14:10-15:50
JFK-HEL AY006: 17:40-08:50 (+1)

Will the crews just have 2 and 3 day layovers in NYC then?

With AY getting A330's, I'm hoping they'll return to SEA when the World economy comes back around.

Would be curious to know too, I think they mix A330/340 and MD-11 crews.

Yes would be cool if they returned to US west coast, I once flew on their HEL-SEA-LAX route in late 1980's. Their last attempt was HEL-SFO in 1990's.

Great news!

Good luck to AY, hope these work out for them.

Looking forward to flying AY again later this year, always had great service on this carrier.

We've been waiting for the perfert US-Helsinki-India schedule quite some time, this is good news! Too bad BOM is on a summer break from the AY schedule...

This is excellent news!! I'm excited to have the joy of seeing the beautiful MD-11 in New York for an extra few month, as it was originally planned for aircraft to stop flying the HEL-JFK route completely next month!

Absolutely fantastic.

Do many travellers currently fly via HEL, to the far east from JFK? Is this routing much longer than the typical transpacific sector?

Why would anyone want to fly Finnair from JFK to China, Japan, HKG and ICN via HEL when they can do so faster on CX/JL/KE/CO/NH/OZ/CA over the Pacific?

So far the AY's timetables haven't really served the JFK-Asia connections.
Checked on Ebookers some total travel times on JFK-HKG: it takes around 21h via HEL, the same via NRT on ANA, 19-24h on AC via YYZ/YYR. The non stop on CX of course the fastest.

The Europe-Asia connections are their core business, but I think they want to test some new ideas rather than ground one MD-11 this early... Personally I'd rather see an other A333 on the JFK-HEL route, their MD-11 is a powerful bird but the Y cabin is outdated.

If you check the total travel times, there often are quite little differences, like on the JFK-HKG route mentioned above. If you left the non stop flights out of course. The easy transit at HEL helps and I suppose AY is ready to fix the timetables in the future if they get serious with JFK-Asia connections.

And of course people don't always choose the fastest route, as it can be seen in the Europe-Asia traffic. There are other factors too, like ticket price, air miles etc.

As someone who did JFK-LHR-HEL-PVG-KIX-ICN-SEA-JFK in 9 days a couple of years ago, JFK-HEL-PVG is *not* any worse than OneWorld's other option, which is NYC-ORD-PVG.

When you look at the route:

JFK-ORD-PVG%2C+JFK-HEL-PVG%0D%0A&RANGE=&PATH-COLOR=red&PATH-UNITS=mi&PATH-MINIMUM=&SPEED-GROUND=&SPEED-UNITS=kts&RANGE-STYLE=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=" target=_blank>http://gc.kls2.com/cgi-bin/gc?PATH=J...E=best&RANGE-COLOR=navy&MAP-STYLE=

You're seeing 7,797 nm against the wind, or 8,721 nm with the wind. And yeah, having the break in the middle is much nicer. Sure, if I was airline agnostic, I could do CO EWR-PVG, but that's 14 hours, 25 minutes. Total flying time JFK-HEL-PVG is about 17 hours, 10 minutes. Not that tragic, frankly.

At the moment very few, since the current timetable doesn't really allow it. But as JFernandez said, via HEL is not that bad compared to other options. And for JFK-DEL it's actually as perferct as you can get: only + 0.7% longer than the non-stop option!

No, A340. It looks next summer AY have 3x MD-11, 4xA333 and 5xA343. MD-11's operate to BKK and JFK.

Haven't noticed any difference in prices, hoping to see some Stockmann-offers later this month... AF-KL have some lowish prices from HEL to NRT for coming summer, around 550e.
