Qantas In Talks To Acquire New Zealand Namesake
Apr 7, 2001
Qantas Australia is in acquisition talks with New Zealand's second-biggest domestic airline, which flies under the Qantas name due to a franchise agreement.
Two years ago the New Zealand Commerce Commission insisted the airline be sold to other parties as a condition of Air New Zealand buying its parent, Ansett Australia.
Qantas New Zealand never recovered after a prolonged pilots' strike last year, which disrupted its timetables for months and led business travelers to switch in large numbers to its main competitor, Air New Zealand.
Qantas Australia told the Australian Stock Exchange on Thursday that it was in discussions to buy the airline.
It did not rule out taking a financial interest in its New Zealand namesake when the airline was rebranded under its name last year.
Qantas is a fierce rival of Air New Zealand on international routes and the domestic carrier would probably link to its external services.

You wrote ..."the chances of Qantas aquiring Air New Zealand is about as big as BA aquiring Qantas".
Sorry to disillusion you but BA ARE the biggest shareholder in Qantas, and with their board representation, veto over senior appointments, effectively control QF (49% overseas owned).
In fact the BA shareholding in QF is the same as SQ in Air NZ. Yet we talk about SQ "controlling Air NZ, but not BA controlling QF. In fact from my experience and observation, there is far more "control by BA than ever SQ.
