Finnair received its first new Airbus A330 aircraft

On Thursday 26 March, Finnair received its first new Airbus A330. The modern Airbus aircraft represent the latest modern technology, because their technical reliability, passenger comfort and fuel efficiency are first class.
“The acquisition of the new aircraft will improve profitability and environmental efficiency significantly. The new Airbus long-haul aircraft consume 20% less fuel than the MD-11 they will replace,” says Finnair’s Deputy CEO Lasse Heinonen.

The A330 and A340 aircraft are distinguished from each other by flying range and cargo carrying capacity. The A330 aircraft will be used on shorter long-haul routes, such as New York and Delhi as well as on the Seoul and Nagoya routes where cargo demand is lower. The aircraft just arrived will make its first commercial long haul flight on 6 April – to New York.

The arrival of the Airbus A330s will improve passenger comfort. Airbus aircraft passengers will be able to make calls, send text messages and short e-mails to terrestrial networks from their own seat as well as call to another passenger on the same aircraft using the entertainment system telephone. In addition, the personal entertainment system will offer passengers a wide range of music and films.

The A330 aircraft will also give the Finnair fleet cabins a new look. The cabins will receive a fresher appearance due to lighter textiles. The seat textiles in both business and economy class will take a step from the fleet’s familiar blue towards a light, blue-grey tone.

During the current year, Finnair will receive a total of five new Airbus A330 aircraft. The next A330s will arrive in April, May and June.

Looks great in AY colours.

Quick question, How come some A330s have a half door at doors 3 (like AY) and some have a full door at doors 3 (like QF)?

JFK will be the first route isn´t it? Or will it fly some domestic sectors first?

She will do some domestic flights to familiriaze the crew on the a/c. Today there will be a press conference for the members of the media to introduce the a/c.

MD11s should be phased out from the fleet by the end of 2010.

I love the A330 on the outside and I love Finnair. It's one of the best airlines out there.

I have one thing though, I'm not a fan of the A330 inside. My experiences with SWISS on it's A330's put me off the type. I hope Finnair don't have the same Y class seats as Swiss, which even a child can't fit in comfortably.

Looking forward to some feedback on how comfortable AY's A330's are in service on log-haul routes.

This would be due to seating configuration requirements...

The end of M11 with AY has already started. OH-LGC left in 2008 and is at QPG as N512SU waiting for F-conv. OH-LGE is leaving in a few weeks.

HEL has also SU Cargo MD-11 weekly.

I like the sound of this, from the pics I have seen I really don't like the look of the AY interior colours, well actually no only the seat covers they look rather cheap esp in business. Look like they have come off a bus.
Are they fashionable in Finland, please I hope I haven't offended anyone but I understand how different cultures have different tastes.

The Finnish taste is rather simplistic, and colours used tend to be rather "calm & controlled", "hillitty ja hallittu" as we say  Smile I'm not a great fan of the new interiors, either. In web version of Okay magazine (AY staff magazine), one can see some pictures of the new economy and business classes. The colours would still somehow be ok, thinking it's a Finnish airline, but the lines criss crossing the textile are not nice, IMO!

However, I'm happy to see these new a/c come, as this will surely improve the service level of AY in long haul ops.

Just read that the new a/c's winglets will be painted to illustrate the "F" logo. The job will be done over the following week end.

I like the blue of the old ones but they were so 'busy' not calm at all for me, the pattern was crazy! hehe I like the simple soothing colours no patterns, I like the sound of this hillitty ja hallittu, perhaps I am Fin at heart?

Does AY really need the 340 for anything? Seems to me that the 330 can do just about anything in their network.

It depends on the seat capacity and configuration.
There is the same option on the A340. Most of them have a "small" door 3, but a variant with a Large Door 3 is (was ?) also available, as shown on this AF A340 :

This is a good point. But could cargo capacity be one explanation?

How I have understood the decision to have a mixed fleet of both, A330s and 340s is indeed due to the difference in cargo capacity in these two models. Some destinations, even though reachable with A330s need the cargo capacity of an A340.

Isn't payload range the bigger issue?

I think the payload is roughly identical for the 2 birds. But the A330 can only haul a max payload 3500nm or so.

Yes, that's basically what I meant. The A330 is not able to haul passengers + full cargo to all AYs destinations, but A340 should be.

So is KLM the only other remaining pax operator of the MD-11? How long do they plan on continuing flying them?
