LH And AF A/c Upgrades At DTW Today?

I was driving by DTW today and saw that Lufthansa had a 747-400, up from the usual A330-300 and Air France brought in an A340-300 today instead of the usual A330-200.

Any reason why they brought in the equipment subs? They usually do this for the autoshow and maybe for summer season, but why in end of March?

Lufthansa has been sending us the 744 since October (which should downgrade to an A333 soon  cry  )

Air France has been sending the A343 here lately, but only on Mondays and Wednesdays. I'm guessing one of the A332s went mechanical and the A343 was a last minute substitution.

Yeah we lost the A346 at MCO after yesterday too. Since I was going to be up at Detroit this weekend, I tried getting my last shot at the A346 on the ramp at MCO on Thursday night, but it arrived in the dark and the pictures did not come out all that great. Back to the boring A333 at MCO down to 5 days a week.

So Detroit is also going down to the A333?

HM came in Thursday night at MCO. My pictures came out shitty for the most part since it was dark and my dumb ass left my regular lens in my office back in the main terminal so I was shooting with a telephoto. The plane much too big for a telephoto. I needed a tripod as the pictures mostly were blurred.

Damn, I am flying out of DTW tomorrow and was hoping to see something different.

Had DLH ever brought in an A346 to DTW? I have only seen the A330-300, A340-200, A340-300 and 747-400 at DTW...

well years ago the 747-200 and DC-10

hah I wish. It's an A340, but at the same time not quite an A340.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard LH's A346s are a little low-yielding, hence DTW might not see one.

Wasn't AF supposed to upgrade this route "permanentely" to a 343 for the summer season due to to the suppression of the NW flight to CDG ? I remember having read this before.

I am booked on an AF flight to DTW this May and I am supposed to be on an A332.

Yes, although it was suppose to be a 777.

Now it's a 332 four times per week and 343 three times.

I still hope that my flight might be a 777. Nothing against the A332 but I have been on A340s and A330s before but never on a 777  Smile

DTW can not support an A346 at the gate therefore DLH never brought in one. In case of a diversion the aircraft has to park on the de-ice pad, because no proper towbars are available.

so you are saying that the main reason why DTW will not see a LH A346 is because they:

a) do not have the proper pushback tug?

or

b) the gate area LH uses does not meet the area specifications for the A346?

Why are they downgrading capacity for the summer? Trans-Atlantic flights are highly seasonal favoring the summer. Is it just a matter of placing the aircraft on another North American flight or something else?

checkmark  D9, the usual LH gate, can hardly handle a B747. as far as I know the A346 is a little bit too long to dock here or any other gate at the North Terminal. And if it can docks there is no towbar available anyways so it will stuck there like VS happend once at AMS during a diversion.  Smile

the loads for summer are very poor and due to economic downturn especially in the automobile industry there is no way to fill 96 premium seats (16F/80C) on a daily basis. the solution is to downgrade the route to an A333.
a) the overall loadfactor will increase, the route will perform better compared to the 744
b) the A333 can handle slightly more cargo, additional income
c) less operating costs compared to the 744, more money in the end for LH
d) PTV in Economy, this may attract the future traveller to book again with LH on this route.

in my eyes the 333 is at the moment the perfect aircraft for this route.

Right. I forgot to look at the ratio of premium seats. It makes sense now.

The booking rates dropped over 10%. The North American market got hit pretty hard by the economic downturn. Much worse than other regions of the world. So LH is cutting capacity. Smaller aircrafts are used and flights are canceled. The second FRA-BOS flight which operates during the summer is completely canceled. The only nice thing is that LH is throwing North America specials on the European market like crazy.

I think that was why they flew them to MCO this winter - better for tourists, I think they are only a 2 class layout.

What if the crew times out and the plane has to unload its pax?

For some stupid reason I was thinking that DLH still flew out of the McNamara Terminal and questioned why it wouldnt be able to park there. Really stupid of me since I flew out of the North Terminal last night when Lufthansa was parked at D9.

Why was Royal Jordanian parked down by D18 or whatever? Where are the international gates in the North Terminal? RJ was parked nowhere near LH

I was glad to see the Delta 747 and 2 Delta A330s yesterday though.

usually RJ arrives at D9 and afterwards they tow it over to D18 as LH 333 has a much shorter turnaround time in DTW than RJ.

during winter they only had six flights a week with the 744, now they are daily again with the 333
