Finnair To MIA Next Winter

As discussed in earlier threads, it looks like AY will re-introduce MIA flights next winter. The schedule will be released and sales will commence on April 1st. Now the question is will it be a non-stop on one of their widebodies, or a replacement for their seasonal leisure flight to FLL with a tech stop in YHZ?

How long AY intends to have the B752 fleet still? I mean, the ladies are getting old, no? Any ideas of replacement for them?

To AY B752s the saying, "moni kakku päältä kaunis../many cake is beautiful on the outside.." works well hahah

Let's hope the possible MIA will be a scheduled service.

I really wonder why they are making the switch over to MIA if it is still just going to be a leisure flight. MIA makes sense as a scheduled destination, they can feed in/out of AA's south america traffic there. The leisure flight will see little to none of this type of traffic. Perhaps American's pending move to terminal 1 at FLL has something to do with this? Unless the tour operators have been screaming for MIA so they will be closer to south beach.

AY Annual Review 2008 says the 757 lease agreements will expire next year, their future is still open. The average age of their 757's is 9,8 years, not too bad I think - but the 29" seat pitch would ruin my trip on any a/c...

Next winter the charter passengers on HEL-HKT are spoiled by a new AY A333, it's a pity MIA is not getting one.

Unfortunately, it will continue to be a 752 flight via Halifax. Schedule is already published, pretty much identical to the FLL schedule.

AY 2987 HEL 0655-0905 YHZ 1005-1320 MIA Mo
AY 2988 MIA 1450-1930 YHZ 2030-0930 HEL Mo

Still, a 752 is better than nothing.

Didn't AY used to have a daily HEL-MIA MD-11 service? Whatever happened to that?

According to YLE, Finnair considers merging their fleet of leisure flights and scheduled flights.

Sorry, only in Finnish

So it is possible that B757s will leave the fleet.

Or only some will remain. According to the YLE-news AY say they need more flexibility: B757 is too big for some intra-European charter routes and their passengers not happy with it on the long hauls... no wonder.

I am no expert but why don´t they just take 2 rows out? Reduce the seats by 12 and add more leg space?  Smile

Does AY transport YHZ pax to MIA with this route? Or is the YHZ stop only for fuel?

Also, do they preclear US Customs in YHZ or in MIA?

Finnair already uses YHZ as a fuel stop on several of its flights to Mexico and Carribean (CUN, HOG, PTY, FLL, etc.). Passengers do not go through Canadian customs as this is just a fuel stop.

However, for this new service, I read on airlineroute.blog that AY was launching YHZ and MIA, which suggest that YHZ will be served to and from HEL.

http://airlineroute.blogspot.com/200...-to-launch-halifax-miami-from.html

Is this true? Or will YHZ merely be a tech stop, as is the case now?

Note: it is specifically mentioned that AY does not have the authority to carry passengers from YHZ to MIA.

Next flights: YQM-YYZ-YOW v.v. / YQM-CUN v.v. / YQM-YUL-YWG v.v. / YSJ-YYZ-SEA-SFO / SFO-YYZ-YOW-YQM / YQM-YYZ-MUC-TXL /

I can see where MIA would be great for connex to AA. Hey, is AY still doing service to SFO or LAX seasonally, or is the west coast just not in plans right now? Just curious.

No, they do not fly to the West Coast and I don't believe they have since at least 1997 or so.

AY MD-11 says good bye to JFK next Sun the 5th April.
The MD-11's are leaving AY's fleet rather quickly, it seems after the summer they will fly HEL-BKK only, all will be gone by next spring. But after that there's still KLM of course.

YHZ is a fuel stop only.

After having done a bit of research on the Web, I discovered that YHZ will indeed be a destination and not just a fuel stop. On Finnair's site, for example, flights are being sold for YHZ-HEL and v.v. on Mondays starting in November (on the direct flights AY2988 and AY2977). Strangely, however, the fare offered on the direct service is much higher than on the YHZ-JFK-HEL (with AA on the YHZ-JFK) flights also offered. I imagine the fares will be adjusted to reflect the "charter" service.

The problems of the 752s are unfortunately far deeper than realigning seats.

The planes appear worn out inside, though shiny on the outside. The seats are crap. One of the seats that I used on these flights had somehow collapsed and one side was much lower compared to the rest. There's no good entertainment system. And generally speaking, intercontinental flights on a narrow body plane are painful.

There is little doubt in my mind that is an error that was made when loading the flight, and it should be corrected soon. That also explains why the available fares are so high.

Does not surprise me as the flights are not for the Canada market rather for the Finland market I suppose.  Smile

25 Andaman : No more AY A757 for me ...without a total cabin face lift. I hope the North-Americans think twice too, last summer I read comments from some Canadian
26 Matt : I agree with you that this is strange. I, too, think it must be a mistake. We'll just have to wait and see. Ironically, I recently bought a ticket on
27 OHLHD : Is there any chance that we will see a 757 flying around Europe this year? ( like a CPH route or so) I like your idea of a A 757.
28 AirGabon : Is AY going to operate this summer a flight from CDG to YUL??? I read that on wikipedia, it looks very weird!!!
29 Humberside : It is/was meant to be a charter for Go Travel Direct, a Canadian Tour Operator. They were going to use a AY B757 do CDG-YUL and LGW-YYZ/Wiinipeg/YHZ/
