no information yet about casualties.
bad publicity for schiphol.

Wasn't there a fire at Burger King in LHR T1 a few years ago?

A coincidence perhaps....?

Continuation

Blast reported at Amsterdam airport

Reports speak of pandemonium in the airport

An explosion and fire have been reported at Schiphol international airport in the Netherlands.
There is no word on casualties, but Dutch television reports quoted by the AP news agency say ambulances have been called to the scene.

Thousands of people were being evacuated, said the reports, and witnesses reported thick black smoke billowing from the terminal.

Shopping area

It is the second incident of its kind this year at the Amsterdam airport. In January, passengers also had to flee, after an explosion in the airport's toilets.

That incident was blamed on youths from the Moluccan islands in Indonesia, a former Dutch colony.

Early reports said Sunday's blast happened in a fast-food in the airport's main shopping area.

Smoke and flames spread across the terminal area and into other shops amid scenes of chaos, said a television reporter.

An airport official quoted by French news agency AFP said the blaze had been brought under control.

Schiphol airport is one of Europe's busiest, handling nearly 40m passengers last year.

CNN

Dutch airport evacuated after fire
April 8, 2001
Web posted at: 1651 GMT

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- A terminal at Schiphol International Airport has been evacuated after a fire broke out in a shopping mall area, airport officials have said.

"There's a lot of smoke," an airport spokesman told CNN on Sunday.

"We don't know what really happened."

Dutch television reported an explosion and fire had triggered the evacuation of thousands of people.

There was no immediate word on casualties, but ambulances were arriving at the airport, one of Europe's busiest.

The explosion apparently occurred in a restaurant in the airport's main shopping plaza, and the resulting fire spread to other shops, the report said.

A television reporter said he saw smoke and flames in the terminal as the area erupted into pandemonium.

The shopping plaza has dozens of high-class shops. Tens of thousands of passengers pass through on a typical day.

It is the second time this year the airport has been evacuated after a fire broke out in a restaurant toilet in January, leaving three people injured.

Hi,

There was an explosion in the flame grill installation of the Burger King restaurant at Schiphol Plaza.

The fire went into the shimney and started a fire on the roof of the terminal building.

Terminal was evacuated. Fire is under control now, no casualties.

Incoming traffic is suffering delays and some aircraft diverted. Two of them to Rotterdam airport.

So nothing serious actually. Fires happen at every place, even airports.

There were ambulances called to the scene, this is a standard procedure.

best wishes
Marcel

So how bad is the damage? Are the terminals all open again?

I am flying there tomorrow, and will spend Wednesday and thursday on the terraces, so hopefully they're open!
