After Boeings retreat last week the chances of the A380 are rapidly rising. First sign: JAL, who denied serious interest in Airbus´ projects recently is now obviously in talks with them again about ordering the Superjumbo.
I guess that this year we will see a A380-order-boom after last years 777-hausse. Airlines might not want to be left behind. Any airline "sleeping" now might find itself way back in the queue. I don´t know how many A380s Airbus might be capable to build, but anything more than 4 or 5 a month would be a lot because thats about the top production rate Boeing had during boom time with the 747-400 in the early 90s. That means about a 2 year´s production is already ordered and it will not be easy to get a A380 in 2006/7 if an airline isn´t ordering very soon.

TOKYO, April 9 (Reuters) - Japan Airlines Co Ltd (JAL) <9201.T> said on Monday it was not in negotiations with European aircraft maker Airbus Industrie 1/8ARBU.UL 3/8 about purchasing its A380 superjumbo.
The denial came after the Financial Times reported, without citing sources, that they had renewed talks over the A380, a superjumbo designed to end the monopoly in large passenger aircraft enjoyed by Boeing Co , the world's biggest civilian plane manufacturer.
The FT said senior Airbus executives believed the group had been handed a golden opportunity to break into the JAL fleet by U.S. rival Boeing Co's decision to shelve development of its large aircraft, the 747X.
"We are in no specific talks with Airbus to buy the A380. The purchase will likely be one option in and after the 2004 business year (beginning in April 2004)," a JAL spokesman said.
Airbus currently supplies other aircraft to All Nippon Airways Co Ltd (ANA) <9202.T> and Japan Air System Co Ltd (JAS) <9203.Q>.
"JAL and ANA are members of the study group for the A380, and we brief them on information about it all the time," a spokesman for Airbus said. "But we are not in concrete talks with JAL."
Airbus had said in late March it aimed to boost its market share in Japan to 50 percent from 18 percent by stepping up its marketing efforts. Airbus has about 50 percent of the global aircraft market, but has struggled in Japan, where airlines have strong ties with Boeing.
In March, JAL announced a mid-term business plan under which it would improve fleet operational efficiency by reducing the number of aircraft types.
It also said in November that it would buy 10 Boeing aircraft.
Airbus, owned by European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co NV and Britain's BAE Systems Plc , has said it expects to land around 100 orders for the A380 before the end of the year, with more than 60 already in the order book.
Shares in JAL closed down 1.04 percent at 475 yen, outperforming a four percent fall in the bellwether Nikkei stock average.

I still belive as I have stated before, that JAL eventually will buy the A380 for domestic services most probably, like HS-LTA said. Interesting point Na, about how if airlines dont order soon they could find themselves in a waiting line while others are already flying them.

Not only for domestic runs but Tokyo to LA and Tokyo to London are amongst the busiest (and highest yield) routes in the world. I don't know about JAL's schedule but BA fly two 747-400s to Tokyo leaving only an hour apart every day. Two flights so close together on such a long haul isn't to provide frequency, it's cos they can't fit 700 people on one aircraft. Yet.

Because Japan has very extensive railway networks, intercity airline service is under decreasing. Especially when Shinkansen is extended to Sapporo, (it's under construction and will be completed within 10 years.) JR gets premier position for 2 busiest destination. Imagine that you can reach Sapporo by 5 hours, which air service takes almost same practically. And JAL's 2nd int'l hub, KIX, is not believed available to accodomate superjumbos.

If JL is quietly negotiating to buy the A380-800, they would likely not be used on domestic routes because of the difficulties in evacuating the plane under ICAO criteria on an all-domestic configuration.
Very likely, JL will more likely configure their planes for international use, seating about 520-530 passengers. They will be primarily used on the following routes:
