ORLANDO, Fla., April 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), announced today that for the second year in a row, the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) has selected the carrier as the top ranked low-cost airline.
AQR study was developed in 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality. AirTran Airways ranked first overall last year and posted the industry's best lost bag ratio this year.
"Maintaining the top spot among low-cost airlines is a real testament to our 8,500 hard-working Crew Members," said Bob Fornaro, chairman, president and CEO of AirTran Airways. "We have distinguished ourselves again this year as a high quality airline with friendly customer service and superior baggage handling, and the AQR recognized our airline's outstanding performance."
While Honolulu-based Hawaiian Airlines received the overall top ranking, AirTran Airways was the highest rated low-cost carrier and second ranked overall of 17 carriers that each account for at least 1 percent of domestic scheduled service passenger revenue.
The AQR reports that AirTran Airways maintained its on-time performance in 2008 with more than three-quarters (76.8 percent) of flights being on time. In addition, the airline improved its mishandled baggage rate, dropping to an industry best 2.87 per 1,000 passengers in 2008 (from 4.06 per 1,000 passengers in 2007).
The Airline Quality Rating 2009 reflects monthly scores for the calendar year 2008 and is based on four major areas: on-time performance, denied boardings, mishandled baggage and customer complaints. Researchers at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Aviation Institute and the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University conduct the study each year.
AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), a Fortune 1000 company, is ranked number one in the 2008 Airline Quality Rating study. The airline offers coast-to-coast flights, North America's newest all-Boeing fleet, friendly service and Business Class and complimentary XM Satellite Radio on every flight. I wonder if it's the cheap upgrades to the C cabin that put them over the edge again? Otherwise, in terms of pretty much every category I can think of, WN and F9 beats them hands down...and I'm sure most would say B6 although I've yet to fly them. The past few flights on FL I've taken haven't exactly been stellar: broken armrests, inop XM radio, filthy cabins, and indifferent in-flight crews.
Next trip 6/12 - 6/15: MSY-SEA on AS, SEA-LAX on VX, LAX-N.O on Amtrak
