UA's suitedreams.united.com says that the 777 reconfiguration in business and first will be completed by the end of 2009, yet they don't seem to have started yet. Are they going to do it or is our dear friend Tilton ruining that too?

They are going to be starting with the reconfigurations in August with a completion date of late 2010. Originally they were all going to be done by the end of this year however there were a few glitches that had to be ironed out with the configuration.

As has been mentioned on here before the reconfiguration will include not only the new F/J seats but UA is also putting in new seats in Y in a 3*3*3 configuration with larger PTVs.

Will they have AVOD? I read somewhere that the change is necessary because each AVOD box can only handle 3 seats.

I flew UA's 777 N774UA (line number 2!!!!) in March this year. She was 2-5-2 and I loved it much more than 3-3-3 on other trips. Only one seat to the aisle and a nice window seat. I personally find it sad to see 2-5-2 go, however this debate is controvers, I know.

All sounds really good!

For me as a peasant always flying at the back, hearing there will be an update to economy is always welcomed!

I don't want to start knocking UA, but is there any news on possible updating the cabins on the 747's as you regularly read here these are very dated and tired...

I'm sure the 744s could use an update, but these planes may all be in the desert before it can happen. I would guess that updating the 777 fleet is a higher priority.

The 744s are almost complete with their upgrades - the upgrades aren't quite extensive as that described for the 777, they have been updated.

All the 744s are receiving (besides the new F/J seats) new bulkhead coverings, carpeting, seat covers, and overhead LCDs in Y. At this point there are no plans to install PTVs in Y but just the cabin refresh went a long way towards modernizing those aircraft.

I'm not sure yet, UA uses the Panasonic eFX system so it's entirely possible. IIRC UA found out that they were not able to install the larger PTVs and maintain the fire rating on the current generation of seats, although I think your right that the AVOD boxes can only handle three seats.

I am off to Singapore next month. I am on a UA 747 in first class. I was in the new first class seat from Rio to Dulles a few months ago and i have to admit, UA really scored big time. It was a spectacular seat. i could have moved in and given up my apartment. Hats off to someone at UA who had the foresight to approve the seat and kick butt for a domestic american airline.
