An overview of today's celebrations by American on their assimilation of TWA:

FORT WORTH, Texas – Employees from American Airlines and Trans World Airlines are celebrating today the uniting of their two airlines in a historic transaction. In St. Louis, Dallas, Kansas City and throughout their network, American and TWA are hosting celebrations to mark the joining together of two of the strongest and most experienced workforces in the airline business. The official close of the transaction is expected later today.

Donald J. Carty, chairman and CEO of America Airlines, said, "Today, we warmly welcome TWA’s employees to the American family. While employees and customers will see business-as-usual for some time, we’re looking forward to working together and building a future as one team. Employees at American and TWA are united in our commitment to meeting our customers’ needs and providing opportunities for growth in a rewarding work environment. Our theme for today’s celebrations is ‘Two Great Airlines – One Great Future,’ and I’m sure that, working together, we can fulfill that promise."

Thousands of TWA and American employees gathered in St. Louis this morning to commemorate the occasion and share their enthusiasm for the transaction. As part of today’s celebrations, Don Carty will be seated in the broadcasters’ booth at the St. Louis Cardinals’ opening day ceremonies at Busch Stadium. At the start of the game, as a special greeting to the St. Louis fans, American’s "American Spirit" 777 airplane and a TWA 757 will fly over the stadium. Following the game, the celebration will move to TWA’s maintenance and administrative centers in Kansas City, and smaller celebrations will occur at various sites throughout the network.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals today vacated its temporary stay and allowed the closing to proceed. The final close of the transaction is expected later today. American Airlines announced earlier this year that it had agreed to purchase substantially all the assets of Trans World Airlines, Inc. through a U.S. Bankruptcy Court proceeding for approximately $625 million in cash and the assumption of aircraft operating leases.

The American-TWA fly over at Busch Stadium is a classy way of announcing their unification.

Whether people like it or not, TWA has been bought and nothing can stop it now. I am a fan of both TWA and American, and I can see more positives than negatives from this transaction.

For the TWA fans out there, what more could TWA endure? They were facing a slow and painful death. This way, they can depart with dignity and with job security for the thousands of employees.

AA's purchase of TWA isn't an *ideal* thing, but given the way TWA's last days played out, it was probably the best ending to a very sad situation. Between Karabu, bad credit/ high leasing costs, and high fuel costs, TWA couldn't hang on without a buyout. And only American, in the end, came through with a serious offer--though many of us would liked to have seen a serious offer to keep the carrier going til Karabu ran out. TWA might well have gone on to a bright new future with its new fleet and good management.

AA-TW of itself is not big enough to trigger superconsolidation, so that issue appears not to have gotten enmeshed in the whole thing. TWA got saved as a unit, and American gets an additional hub operation which will help relieve O'Hare and DFW.

With Karabu gone, "TWA Airlines" traffic will probably drop some, but that can only spell relief for congested ORD and DFW. American can start shifting some connecting pax to STL. The St. Louis city fathers also deserve credit for pushing the new STL runway through the excruciating and excessively long environmental review process, despite uncertainty about TW's future. Now, when the runway opens in (I think) five years, Lambert will still be well posititioned to host a major airline hub, remain a major regional economic engine, and help reduce delays in the national system.

Today is best described as bittersweet, I think.

While out at AUS today I saw a TWA 712 get a water cannon salute upon departure from the gate.

I had been wondering what those fire trucks were doing parked facing each other....

"TWA 526, Austin ground. Clear to taxi to rwy 17-R via Golf 1 to Golf. Make sure the windows are up, reports of a level 1 thunderstorm at Golf 1." was what I heard on my scanner.

Got some shots of the shower but from a greater distance than I would have liked. If I'd know about it ahead of time I would have been at a closer location. Oh well. Just have to wait for the slides to get back now.

To all the people complaining about AA's purchase... Would you rather have seen TWA just disappear completely and thousands of people be out of their jobs?
Without AA's offer, I really doubt TWA would have continued to exist. I hate to see TWA go as much as the next person, but at least they found someone who was willing to make an offer and allow them to continue to operate for the past couple of months and that promises to keep a majority of the employees.

Anybody know what the flight crew of the AA 777 will be? Reason I asked is that I have a friend whose Dad is a 777 captain for AA, and they are both in St. Louis.

I am also an AA and TWA fan. So, I am pretty happy. Yes, TWA is disappearing today, but would you rather have seen it go bye bye? Or see it bought by AA? With AA, many people have job security, those slots TWA had can now be used. There are clearly more positives then negatives, today is best described as bittersweet.
I clearly agree with Aus_Spotter and AA trippleseven.
TWA planes may be gone, but the memories will last.

I think AA will use TW's assets to great advantage.  Smile

By having a hub that can relieve the pressure on both ORD and DFW, they now are positioned to be a major player for flying to Europe and Asia from the Midwest.
