LAS will reopen 25L/7R next week, just in time for higher temperatures and (hopefully) busier runways for the summer months.

The Clark County Department of Aviation will reopen one of McCarran International Airport‘s four runways next week, several days before its previously announced May 1 return to service. Runway 25L/7R and the adjacent taxiway Alpha have been closed to aircraft since Nov. 1 so contractors could replace their former asphalt surfaces with more-durable concrete and asphalt surfacing. The runway’s actual reopening date will be decided early next week based on the progress of some final preparations by McCarran’s Airside Operations division.

A week early, not too shabby. I noticed that Las Vegas Paving had the primary contract. Between 25L/7R and the Hoover Dam bypass they are quite busy these days!

Can't wait to go back to the Sunset Spotting Spot again for the heavy metal action!  airplane

This will help greatly when the occasional crosswind is strong for the 1's/19's.

Next flights: WN DSM-LAS-PHX, US PHX-SJD. Return: US SJD-PHX, WN PHX-MDW-DSM

I'm not sure how you came to that conclusion. The re-open of 25L has only one positive, and that's increasing the available capacity that LAS can manage. The heat has nothing to do with it, as 25R, the longest runway at the airport by a long shot, is already open.

Yes, but the preferred operational configuration during the runway closure was departures from 1L at taxiway B (8000' usable runway) and landings on 1R/19L and 25R/7L. This configuration only resulted in a 10% capacity decrease over the 4-runway configuration, other configurations (needed for various wind situations) decreased capacity by 25% or more. Thus, getting the runway reopened was key to returning to the old configuration with departures on the long runway, needed for the summer months.

Gotcha. FYI, I'm no expert in LAS. I've only worked flights to it 2-3 times since the closure.

The other positive is the spotting area on Sunset. Planes are much closer. Well, that is , if they still have it. When I was in Vegas in Nov it was open but the view was blocked by construction equipt.

Bet OPNLguy will be thrilled regarding company ops. Big grin

(Fewer planning-related headaches with it open again.)
