Sad news has just come through on the BBC announcing the death of a british boy and the injury of 8 other UK nationals when a Cessna 208 Caravan crashed due to an apparent engine failure. The 8 others are currently in hospital.
Sad day for the family of the boy and lets hope the others pull through, it looks as though the situation is being taken care of well by the travel companys and the embassy. RIP

I went to Canaima national park from Margarita Island in Feb 08 on a trip with First Choice Holidays, i must say it was a fantastic trip, but when we landed at Canaima, the aircraft on the landing strip looked even more ancient than the flight we had been on for 2 Hrs. We decide to do the table top/waterfall tour rather than do the the Air view of Angel falls. I feel so sorry for the family, i wanted to see Angel Falls so badly, thats why i went, but you dont expect anything like this to happen do you?

Really sad news. My condolences to the family.
I must say that this is not the first time that a plane crashes in Canaima. A couple of years ago a small plane of Rutaca crashed in the zone with a lot of tourists aboard.

The operator was Linea Turistica Aerotuy (ICAO code TUY). This is the second C208B they have lost - admittedly in 27 years of operation - and their first fatal. Some info on LTA here

Extremely sad day for all involved, especially the boy's family.
I very nearly went to Angel Falls last October but decided against it. I believe they are beautiful & I can imagine how excited the family were at taking this excursion.

Quoting AIH039 (Reply 1): the aircraft on the landing strip looked even more ancient than the flight we had been on for 2 Hrs.
Well, and...?
If properly maintained and to standards, I would gladly fly in a 60 year old aircraft as soon as I would fly a 2 year old aircraft.
I'm being serious. Friends were partners in owning a 1949 Beechcraft A35 Bonanza aircraft. A little tattered as far as seats went, but it passed every single year's annual inspection and had appropriate overhauls as needed and required. No less safe for its age. Never had in-flight issues with it.
