There was a NW 747-400 in OMA surrounded by emergency vehicles around 5am this morning. Was trying to figure out where it came from.
Around 6am, they unloaded the plane onto buses. I'm assuming this is coming from over seas, how does that work with customs since OMA doesn't have customs facilities?
What did they do with the people? Fly in another plane?

Weird...it was surrounded by lots of police cars and fire trucks at first and then the fire trucks left and it was just police cars...(maybe 8 or so with lights flashing) Just looked like an emergency but I guess it could have just been a charter. Interesting.

Emergency equipment was probably there to honor the vets....

Its was a charter for WWII veterans - 2 747s full came through IAD, 1 on Thursday and 1 on Friday, for the vets to take a day trip to the WWII memorial downtown.
The emergency vehicles were at IAD as well for the water salute and they took quite a few busses with about 100 wheelchairs.
NW does this around twice a year - last year it was with the 747-200s

I was flying out of OMA on Wednesday night 4/23 on CO when, as we awaited departure, I saw one of these NW 747-400s up close on arrival. Pretty neat sight and exceptionally rare for OMA.
Didn't realize they were there on Thursday and Friday too. Neat program.

The first 747 came in on Wed night from MSP, spent the night, left Thursday morning with 400 veterans going to DC. It came back from IAD Thursday night, spent the night again and did the same thing Friday morning with another 400 veterans. Friday night, another 747 returned but this time in DL colors. It dropped off the 400 veterans and then repositioned to DTW. All the fire trucks were there to help load and unload the 400 veterans (many disabled) up and down the airstairs. I got tons of great photos of the DL 747 but won't be uploading anything for a few more weeks. Keep your eyes out though!
