Aloha everyone,

I am doing a research project on Hawaiian Airlines for my airline finance class. I need the following info:

When did Hawaiian start their Hawaii-Japan flights that were later suspended and sold to Northwest? I understand they didn't have the expertise in the Japanese market and never really made it there.

Whats the current fleet numbers? I've seen some DC-10's and DC-9's now parked at Mojave desert. Have they been replaced by the newer 717's and DC-10-30's?

Cities x flights served from LAX?

Honolulu
Las Vegas
Kona
Papette (Renaissance cruice charter)
?

Mahalo for your help in advance!

Best regards,
A. Diaz

Don't know much about HAWAIIAN, but I do know that the new 717's are slowly going to replace the DC-9's, and for now HAWAIIAN DC10's will still fly the HI-mainland flights. Hope this helps..

One more question!

When was Hawaiian's first annual profit after serveral years of losses? This due to the restructuring and their agreement with American which provided them with a great deal on the DC-10's which replaced the very expensive to maintain L-1011's?

Mahalo!

One more question.

Anyone know the market share they have on the Hawaiian market?

Hawaiian has 14 DC-10's and 15 DC-9s.
Two 717 are in, and will replace the DC-9s by the end of the year. 13 717 to replace 15 DC-9s
Two of the DC-10-10s have retired from the fleet. Current fleet consists of 4 DC-10-30
and 10 DC-10-10. Check www.hawaiianair.com under corporate facts.

They have about 40% of the interisland market.
First profit was in 1999 after many years of loss.

They also fly from LAX to Kahului, Maui.

They serviced Japan from HNL in the mid to late 1980s with the L1011s. These were replaced by DC-10s from AA (leased) after selling the L1011s. They also flew DC-8-62 of Australia

Actually, Hawaiian currently has 5 DC-10-30s. N140AA, N141AA, N68060, N12061, and N35084.

Hawaiian serves the following destinations from Honolulu:
  • Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii
  • Hoolehua, Molokai, Hawaii
  • Lanai City, Lanai, Hawaii
  • Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
  • Kailua-Kona, Big Island, Hawaii
  • Hilo, Big Island, Hawaii
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Francisco, California
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Pago Pago, American Samoa
  • Papeete, Tahiti

In additon, Hawaiian provides seasonal charter service to Anchorage, Alaska and year round charter nonstop service to Las Vegas, Nevada.

From Los Angeles:
  • Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii
  • Kahului, Maui, Hawaii
  • Las Vegas, Nevada
  • Papeete, Tahiti (Renaissance Cruises charter)

DC-9s parked in the desert are being replaced by 717s. The parked DC-10s have been replaced by other DC-10s as heavy maitenence becomes due.

I agree with Lahina's recommendation that you check out Hawaiian's web site at http://www.hawaiianair.com. In particular, I think you will be interested in their Annual and Quarterly reports which are available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format and their montly operating statstics, which are posted on the News Releases page.

Hope this helps,

David

Ammendum to my previous post:

Hawaiian no longer serves the Kona-Los Angeles market nonstop. When they first started the Los Angeles-Maui flights, it was a Los Angeles-Kahului-Kona-Los Angeles triangle some days of the week and others Los Angeles-Kahului-Los Angeles. They discontinued the Kona stop and it now operates Los Angeles-Kahului-Los Angeles daily.
