Anyone know whats up at MSP tonight? Apparently there are 2 AA 767s and 1 AA 757 at the G gates. Curious to know if this is a charter, diversions or whats going on? A nice treat though at MSP!

Initial guess would be diversions due to ORD storms, but let me see if I can do a little more research  Smile

Diversion flights.

An AS flight doing ANC-ORD diverted to MSP. One of the AA 767s was doing CUN-ORD but diverted to MSP, so I'm guessing the other 767 and 757 were diversions. Anyone know what is going on at ORD?

It ain't no normal MD80 its a Super 80!

Looks like I may have been right, as I can at least find:

AA159 - B767, Moscow Domodedovo to Chicago, diverted to MSP

Also, it must have been before you, but:
AA47 - B777, London Heathrow to Chicago was also diverted earlier but made it to ORD

AA448, a B767 doing CUN to ORD. It should still be on the ground in MSP. Looks like it did several loops over western Illinois before finally going to MSP.

I was checking my local area on FlightAware this afternoon, and it showed an AA 777 ducking in to MSP (but this must have been the one that went back to ORD). Of course then the red light goes off that ORD is having problems. Sure enough they were getting hit with a thunderstorm. Funny that the 777 turned back around. It was already halfway through it's approach procedure to MSP.

I just noticed that Alitalia served IND this evening!

So MSP, MKE and IND got some cool diversions.

You bet, there was a Swiss A340 here too. As soon as I saw the diverts on flightaware I drove up to get a first hand look myself. Here's some pics I took:

Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

That's where I took the SAS pic from, but for the LOT and Swiss Air pic I was standing by the international arrivals terminal.

I was at a baseball game in Peoria tonight and saw an AA MD-80 fly over on approach, so I called my dad and he said that two AA Mad Dogs landed in PIA. (One from PHX and one from LAS). Also, I saw a Shuttle America E-170 leaving after its diversion from MSY-ORD. Looking on Flightaware now, it shows that a JetBlue 320 from LGB also landed in PIA.

Anyone know why they sent it all the way up to MSP instead of somewhere closer to ORD like MKE or RFD? How do they decide who goes where?

I'd imagine an international flight would be diverted to an airport with on staff customs agents, in case the flight ends up cancellnig and they have to clear through passport/customs control.

MSP, DTW, CVG would be the first ones that come to mind that have full service customs abilities that could handle multiple international flights at the same time.

I don't know what MKE has for customs. Maybe they only have staffing/international gate space to handle a couple of flights, and then that is it?

MKE would be hard-pressed to clear more than one widebody at a time for facilities reasons. Also, I'm not sure anyone has equipment to unload cans at MKE; it's been some time since NW had DC-10 service.

They don't regularly staff their International Arrivals building, but there was a scheduled NW flight from CUN due in later that evening so they must've had people ready. I think they might have bused the Swiss flight passengers down to ORD because when I got there none of the lights were on inside the plane and there were some airstairs pulled up at the front. Here's some pics of the building itself:
