Athens, March 19, 2001 -- In view of the prevailing international harmonization of the civil aviation industry, Olympic Airways has announced that :

from April 15, 2001 all international flights will be non-smoking.

All head rest covers will show the "non-smoking sign" while computer reservation systems will be updated accordingly so as to inform all passengers traveling to or from Athens.

We remind you that domestic flights are already non-smoking.

-----------------------------------------------------
This is good news for OA. All of you who avoided OA because of smoking can now have another choice for travelling. OA has now come closer to the international standards.  Big thumbs up

Well, it is a step if you consider how many people avioded Olympic because of smoking. Just see how many people from these forums disliked OA for smoking policy!

For the ATH-JFK-ATH route, it was thanks to the american FAA that olympic had to forbid smoking during flight.

Smoking will not help anything. They got 100 million dollar depth to solve =). 52 aircrafts 20 of them are old as hell. Cant wait for those new orders to come in.

A non-smoking policy is no-brainer. Shame it had been upheld for so long - such an image of a third-world country.

As for the debt (not depth) that they have to solve, these are hard times - Καιροί ου Μαινετοί -.

But allow me a comment regarding the fleet. Currently there are 32 active jets in OA's fleet plus 6 in the subsidiaries (4x 313, 3x 306, 14x 737 2nd Gen, and 11x 732s, plus 3x 717 and 3x 734), of which the 11 732's are to be gone soon, replaced with 11 737-700 and 4 737-800.
WHEN this happens (or should I dare say IF?) OA's fleet will be among the younest in the world, with an average age less than 5 years.

Obviously in the 52 ount, of which "20 of them are old as hell" you count the 4x 742, 9x 727 and who knows what others that are out of service long ago.

George. We will not know until last minute if the planes will actually arrive to the OA fleet. Like you said we dont even know if they will arrive. "younest in the world" youngest you mean. This doesnt mean anything to me at least. Of course I will love to fly on the 737 and the 738 instead of the -400 and -200s but OA doesnt feel right at the moment. The no smoking policy is good because like you said when passengers were able to smoke it looked really bad for Greece and the Airline. I talked to my Uncle who is a Captain on the A340 for Olympic and he told me how much they need to get out of Government hands or Olympic will be torn down gradually.

PS. Sorry for the Greek

Hi, OlympicEagle.

Isn't this maddening? The "official" announcement is still out there, calling for a first delivery sometime in June 2001. The summer flight schedule – just posted – has no 737NG at all.

Back to smoking: do we realize that without smoking on board, there is a fuel savings factor, because the air-filtering system has less “garbage” to handle? I don’t have hard numbers, but having all these “χαρμανια” on board, the AC had to work full throttle all the time!

George

BTW, OlympicEagle is the only 742 that I never flew on, since it left OA before I came to the US.

George hello again. The 747-200 Olympic Eagle was still in use lasat summer. It was last seen at Heathrow. I think ive flown on it at least 10 times. I dont understand why they would use Olympic Eagle. The plane that is the most in shape is Olympic Spirit. It was the best 747-200 had. Very clean etc. Maybe they use it this year which I doubt. I think Olympic Eagle did some flights to Canada. I would love to be able to fly the 742 again. I always loved the Analog cockpits. The a340 is more high tec and easier to fly. But 742 will always be the best at least to me. I was a lil upset when they didnt purchase the 744 but there was a good reason behind it. Yes the summer routes dont have 737ng and I think it will stay like that till the end of May. As we know Olympic loves to delay and always do something last minute which is embarrasing. BTW the donniers I think will have to go soon also. Is there a new donnier out right now?
