DL Drops FSM-ATL Service

This, in yesterday's edition of the Fort Smith Southwest Times Record.....

http://www.swtimes.com/articles/2009.../29/business/business042909_01.txt

The service started in 2007 with two flights a day, but recently had been reduced to a single ATL-FSM-ATL flight. In the article it states that the airport will try to convince DL to bring the service back once the economy picks up. I think they should concentrate on convincing DL to go west, to SLC. I was told by the previous director that they had thought of promoting a service to the west, but via DEN on UA. UA does not currently fly out of FSM.

I also have a selfish motive as I'm trying to find a convenient way to get to SLC to visit the grandkids!  Wink

TUL is a two hour drive (and they keep going from two flights a day to one flight a day on DL) and XNA no longer has service to SLC.

Not that there's much Saab capacity to be had, but FSM-MEM on Saabs might work well.

Already flown with CRJ's.

I doubt FSM-SLC would work...too long and thin to be profitable on a CRJ especially when oil prices rise.

Hey, I'm relying on you folks to help me sell this thing!!

TUL-SLC is done with a CRJ and only being marginally further than FSM, although it will change to 1X daily on a CR7 this summer.

Wishful thinking on my part, I guess, especially as they had the idea about DEN on UA.

BTW, I just noticed that there's been no change in Deltamatic yet regarding this change

Still got 3x daily CRJs on NW/DL to MEM, so this should come as no surprise.

MEM can still get you to most major destinations.

What smaller markets in Texas/Oklahoma/Arkansas does DL still serve from ATL? They dropped LAW and now FSM... GRK is the one that comes to mind.

XNA is the only other one I can think of. I do consider XNA a small market, despite the heavy traffic created by Walmart. There's a few small markets in Louisiana that still have ATL as well like LFT, AEX and MLU. Theoretically, these markets could be easily done by MEM alone, but right now they all have 3x CRJ service to ATL, so it doesn't seem like they'll get cut.

Don't they still operate to SHV out of ATL?? I wonder if that will be changed to a MEM route, too?

Ok....DL still has 5X daily ATL-SHV service and NW has 3X daily service MEM-SHV. I believe DL's service to SHV has always been strong. I would think it would support some mainline service.

BTW, where are the SHV folks that used to be on here?

checkmark I think the theory is (and should be) if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Both NW and DL seem to have done well to the Louisiana markets.

I agree, though I think service patterns might change dramatically when we return to $100+/barrel oil. Many of these CRJ routes might not be so desirable.

Agreed-- MEM gives them flexibility that they didn't have before.

Oh yeah, I'm still here, I just haven't had much to post and my displeasure with the Shreveport Airport Authority continues to grow.

However, they did FINALLY open the new cargo area for FedEx and UPS, yesterday. It's really nice.

Have they done any DL re-branding at the terminal?

I wondered how many gates they would use? Is the entire east side DL & NW or is US over there, too?

Yes, the east side gates are NW and Delta. US isn't here anymore and they pulled out about 4-5 years ago. Allegiant is also sharing a Delta Jetway on the S corner of the terminal. And there are 4 empty gates that are wasting away.

I can remember the days when the entire east side was ours although we didn't use the gate furthest to the north, but we did use all the space under the gates for bagroom, maintenance, ops and cabin service.

Yep, I remember those days too, but for the life of me I can't remember who occupied that gate to the north. Was it Royal? TWA did use the gate briefly, but they moved down to the current NW gate shortly after they came into SHV.

When I was there in 80-82, NOBODY used that gate. Royale used to park over by air cargo (the old terminal). I think TWA was on the west side along with Frontier, AA and Braniff.
