The Kentucky Derby is here and the special flights have already began into SDF.

I have noticed US flying a 733 and 734 from CLT and an E70 from PHL and LGA. All of these are upgrades from the usual CR7/CR9 and CRJ/E145 aircraft we get.

DL is putting multiple MD88 flights up, which is just a frequency increase.

CO is putting up 738 from IAH and 735 from EWR today, more to come I'm sure.

In the past DL and CO have both had 757 here and DL even a 763.

AA doesn't seem to be doing anything special and UA seems to have a few more E70 coming in than usual.

Have had fun watching Flightaware today, hope to get to the airport at sometime for some pictures too.

Cheers,
John

Here are just a few of the flights. Kind of like the glory days at SDF.

Interesting to see that US 1605 is a regularly scheduled flight IAH-CLT-SAV. Doing a little investigating I see that SAV wass downgraded to a CR7 today-namely the same flght number that normally operates to SDF on that hub!

Hmmm AA upgraded the DFW-SDF-DFW flight to a CRJ this month (starting May 6th). I was curious as too why. Now I know.

AA only had 3 MD80 flights, previously it was 2 ERJ and 2 MD80.

They added an ERJ flight about a month ago in addition to the two MD80 flights.

I guess they could put a CR7 in instead of the ER4 for the Derby crowd.

I have seen SDF grow some, US was putting an E70 on the last CLT run every night to RON and then turn back to CLT in the morning. It's back to a CR7 now I think.

Even going to get a 752 on the 82 mile flight from CVG to SDF!

I guess it's an easy turn to fill in while a plane would normally be on a long layover.

I find it extremely interesting that US put a mainline flight into SDF considering that the station is now, and has been for at least 5 years, an express station.

Also looks like NW is running a couple of extra DC-9's than usual to SDF from MSP and DTW - although as much as I prefer DC-9's over the A320 series I would like to see them bring some Airbuses in here for Derby.
Today there has been an almost endless stream of biz jets coming into town and I'm sure this will be the case tomorrow as well.

I believe US does it every year. They upgauge aircraft at locations with large events, even if it's an Express station. DAB is a good example. The CRJs turn into 737s in Feb. for the 500. The same thing happens in GSO twice a year with the furniture mart and I believe in AGS in years past for the Masters, although I don't think it was only some extra RJ or Dash frequencies this year.

It just shocks me the difference in equipment between SDF and my hometown of BNA. I would've thought that US would put a 737 into there or an A319 reguarly. Of course, I didn't know that it was an Express station until a few weeks ago so that would explain some things I suppose. SDF seems like a big enough market to get more mainline a/c than they do.

SDF was always a mainline market for US until WN came in. I was a loyal US passenger and always flew 732, 733, 734, D9S, F28, F100 and even M80 into SDF from PIT, DCA, BWI, CLT and LGA. Those were the days.

I keep hoping that we may one day even get some US service to PHX. I think they could run a CR9 through here bridging PHX and CLT through SDF but it hasn't happened yet. Heck, would be awesome to get an A319 here from PHX, the only passenger Airbus we've ever had was when F9 flew here from DEN.

I fly DL now because of company travel policy and I'm happy they still have some mainline to ATL. I've flown M88, 737 and 738 on DL into SDF.

I know here in Nashville we get both 737's and A319/A320's on US and even CRJ200-900's on them daily and it just seems wild they can fill them up here. Of course here, F9 has carved out a market for themselves and they do a good job so we still have the animal tails around here thankfully.

SDF getting a 757 from CVG has got to be a fun flight for those on the flight. LOL!!! Basically, you go up and then back down about that fast! HAHA!

I would love to see SDF get some more mainline back. How's the new Compass hangar coming along??

I asked my dad about that, who used to work in SDF prior to the closure of the mainline operation. He said that a handful of stations are in between and do allow for mainline to operate once in a while.

As for SDF as a big market compared to BNA, it isn't Louisville doesn't attract a lot of flying tourists for the Louisville Slugger Museum and SDF has to compete with other airports considering LEX is just 60 miles to the southeast, CVG is about the same to the northeast, and IND isn't too far as well.

BNA still has the advantage as being the Country music capital of the world and no real alternates for people living in a 60 mile radius.

Yeah, you are right about that. Enough about us in BNA though. If I wasn't headed to New Mexico for some L-1011 photos at Roswell this weekend, i'd head up to SDF for some photos but I digress. Derby time is always neat up there around the airport with all the equipment upgrades and biz-jets in town!!

Luckily SDF does get mainline from WN (737), AA (M80), DL (M88 and sometimes 737-700/800) and NW (DC9).

We do get the E170 from NW and UA quite often and, as I said, sometimes from US.

The Compass hangar is coming along, not sure how done or not-done it is. But I was on a CZ flight last week to DTW from SDF and we had a maintenance issue with the service galley door. The crew told us since SDF is a maintenance base it would be easy to get it fixed quickly, and it was.

Cheers,
John

Yes, I saw a beautiful G5 land over my house the other day. I live in southern Indiana right about where many aircraft turn. Oh man, the money it must take to own one of those.

Up until the late 90's every legacy had mainline service into SDF. In addition to the US aircraft you mentioned, I remember CO DC-9's from CLE, UA 733's from ORD, and TWA DC-9's from STL. The rest of the legacies still fly mainline here, usually 2-3 flights a day; back then both AA and DL flew 727's here-DL from ATL and DFW, AA from DFW. NW of course still has the DC-9's.
I believe WN entered SDF around '93 or '94 but didn't have nearly as many flights here as they do now (BWI, MDW, STL, LAS, PHX, MCO, TPA).

Also looks like NW is sending both A319's and A320's (even an A319 from MEM) and US is sending an A319 (and a few E-190's). Several DL 757's including one to CVG and a CO 739 to IAH.

There's an endless stream of biz jets departing SDF all day of course; after the Derby yesterday I drove by there and the place was covered with them, parked all along the taxiways and tarmac even by the passenger terminal.

I saw the UA A320 take off as I was driving home just a little bit ago. If the weather was nicer I'd have the camera out there today.
