Interesting on that HNL-NRT. I guess the Japanese are loving the U.S. lately, huh?

The weak dollar makes it cheaper for them.

my guess is that with the front cabin's being almost the same capacities now, the NRT to HNL flight needs the economy space  Smile

Isn't the US$ pretty strong lately? Much stronger than what it was before 9/2008

DL had also intended to downgauge to a 333 but are now back to using a 744. DL has stated publicly that the Pacific beach markets are still doing well for them. Seems like that is likely the case for UA as well.

I'm booked on UA SFO-SGN in late June. I received a schedule update notice that this is no longer same plane service, and I must change planes in HGK. Previously, it was same plane service, and listed as "1 stop." I wonder why this is, as both legs are still 744.

The SGN tag is now operated by the aircraft that comes in form ORD, your aircraft out of SFO now continues onto SIN.

JPY Japanese Yen has been stronger, especially vis a vis USD, Euro, and Pound.

Just good to see KIX flights staying around.

The Dollar is only about 4% weaker against the Yen today than a year ago. It's roughly 100 Yen to the Dollar now..A year ago today it was about 104. The Dollar was at its weakest against the Yen late last year and early this year when it reached about 88 Yen.. It's been quite a bit stronger since the end of February, mostly in the 96 to 100 Yen range.

True.

I've kept an eye on KIX, and it has been one of the weaker performer in the Pacific loadwise since the New Year - some 15 points or so behind NRT for example.

The NGO/KIX curse seems to be alive and well.

Usually HKG-SGN and HKG-SIN flights switch due to operational considerations. ORD flight arrives before SFO flight and SGN flight departs before SIN flight...you have to get off the aircraft anyway...so no big change.

The people who vacation in Hawaii from Japan are usually quite well off and probably aren't affected by the downturn in the economy. Same as here in North America, most people who have been affected by the economy probably did not have to cancel their plans to travel to Hawaii.

Your understanding of the Hawaii market is quite off. Hawaii is not an high end destination, but instead one very much for the masses from both from the US and Japan.

Hawaii has seen a significant decline in traffic with Q1 visitor arrivals down 14.0 percent compared to 2008. The only silver lining has been Japan market which saw a 0.6% increase in March, likely as result of the Japanese refocusing back on traditionally well known sure bet tourist markets like Hawaii after a few years of declines as they ventured other places.
