I've read numerous references to an "updated" avionics package for the 747-8, but I'm curious if anyone knows what the flight deck will look like?

Are they planning to retain the -400 cockpit, but with the LCDs from the -400F? Or maybe more of a 777 style deck? Or perhaps something closer to the new 787-style flight deck?

Just cust curious... I haven't seen any photos or renderings of the proposed flight deck anywhere.

Thanks in advance!

Here is a FlightSimulator game image of a 747-8 Captain's panel. I am guessing they did not pull it out of their bums and it is based on what Boeing's actual design intends.

This French page on the 747-8 includes an image they claim is a mock-up of the 747-8 cockpit.

Pretty much like the -400. Pilots can fly both 747-400 and 747-8 with the same type rating.

Isn't the 747-8 going to be FBW....?

From the pictures I've seen it's going to look pretty similar, there's just some smaller changes.

Partial FBW (ailerons and spolerons IIRC).

Last I read the spoilers and ailerons will be FBW. Having FBW makes it even easier to share the 400 type rating.

Since the aircraft will be CATIIIC (if there is such an approach designed and certified) having a HUD accomplishes nothing and adds complexity and $$$ when you don't need it.

The -8 cockpit moves closer to the 777 with a curser control device (mouse pad) and accociated electronic checklist. I believe it will also have a side looking profile at the bottom of the ND.

Apparently, it's going to look something like this:

OK, in all seriousness, I wonder why they didn't make the screens a bit bigger, a-la 787. It really does look almost identical to the 744 cockpit.

And what is with Boeing and the sheepskin fetish?

It lets you do HUD takeoffs, which can be a big benefit for some operators but I'm not sure how much value there is for 747-8 operators.

Probably...they retrofitted that onto the 737NG recently.

Probably trying to hold common type-rating with the 747-400...that means you can't do very much with the instrument layout.

It's comfy for long periods and it wears well. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

But the 764 cockpit looks totally different from the 763/2 layout...

But that doesn't get you anything. We are authorised to do a 75m takeoff, having a HUD would get us no improvement.

HAHA! Great!

Quoting Zeke (Reply 10):

They do look almost identical, just the-8 being a bit more simplified in the cockpit. What sort of training will pilots have to do to make the transition from the -400 to the -8? Is there any? Or is it just a matter of getting used to a bigger plane?

It's my understanding that they don't hold a common rating.

I would assume it would be very similar to going from the A340-300 to A340-500/600, a systems ground school, exam, and some flying.
