Cant remeber the last time i saw it being used, it must have been about 12 yrs or so ago. Rather exiting to sit in my firms car park at the threshold and count the rivets.
Also a few posts ago there was talk on the 707 that decided to land at Northolt instead of LHR. Since then there are two gasometers (Southall and Harrow) that still have direction arrows on them one NOR the other LHR for pilots confirmation. esp for 23 at LHR

Hello to you all,
I did a few landings and take-offs on 23 at LHR.
( between 10 and 4 years ago, when F/O on 737 )
The only time 23 is used for landing is when the crosswind components on 27 exceed the limits. ( mostly in rainy conditions, decreasing those limits ).

23 is used only very rarely (in conditions as "Myself" suggests) because landing traffic on 23 will always conflict with departures off 27L or traffic taxiing out for 27R. This slows down the inbounds rate. Also, the arrival tracks from the holds onto 23 are more complex, further reducing inbound capacity, and there are aircraft parking stands on the end of 23 that serve terminal 4 that cannot be used when 23 is in use, reducing the amount of aircraft parking positions available for that terminal.
Using 23 reduces traffic flow, increases delays, etc. etc. It is therefore a runway of last resort when the crosswinds get real bad.
I have *never* seen or heard of 23 being used for departures, only landings, and I have never heard of the other end - 05 - being used at all.

During nearly 20 years of numerous visits to Heathrow, only once did I ever see an aircraft land on 05, this was an Iberia DC10 some time around 1977-80.
In the same 20 years the total departures I ever saw on 23 would probably be in single figures.
Rumour has it, that the occasional Caravelle or Concorde would be seen using a parachute after landing on 23, although I never saw it myself.
