also worth noting that as all these flights route via BKK this means that ET will increase their ADD-BKK flights to 12 weekly from the current 9 times weekly . ET are generally considered to be a more or less guaranteed future member of *A and BKK is of course a *A hub .

You have to come see the check-ins for Ethiopian. I never knew a baggage cart can haul so much. They must be doing very well just charging foe excess baggage.

The baggage, mainly boxes, can pile up taller than the person pushing the cart! ET usually gives 30-40 kg allowance per passenger in economy.

30 to 40kgs!!!!
Wow, all the US Airlines would be in the black numbers with the revenue made from bagage fees lol.
Never knew there was so much traffic between Ethiopia and China / HKG.
Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight: AMS-FRA-SIN-FRA-AMS

It is interesting that ET, a likely future Star member, is going to fly daily to a SkyTeam hub. Wouldn't they have more connectivity at PEK, which is an Air China (i.e., Star Alliance) hub?

Quoting EddieDude (Reply 8): Thanks for the clarification Andrew. It is great to see that ET is expanding in other continents
my pleasure - I have just checked the ET website and it looks as though currently Beijing is served 5 times weekly , it will be interesting to see whether this increases as well .
China seems to be putting a lot of investment into Africa at the moment and ET has one of the best African networks with ADD well placed as a hub to connect Asia to the African continent - I would imagine that this would account for a lot of the success of the ADD-BKK-CAN/HKG ( and presumably BJS ) services . It will be interesting to see if at some future point these services are de-linked to provide nonstops to ADD for even better connectivity. I found a really interesting news article a few weeks ago about ETs ADD hub , I will see if I can find the link for you

Thanks a lot mate! Very appreciated
Yeah, I have read about a lot of infrastructure projects in Africa being sponsored by Chinese companies. From Algeria to Angola to Ethiopia, it seems that Chinese money is flowing aplenty. I think we should not be surprised if we see Chinese airlines also expanding their routes and frequencies to Africa.
Andrew, on an unrelated subject, where are Curepipe and Floreal?

Hi Eddie , this is not the link I was looking for , although I still think it is interesting reading - I suspect the one I wanted to give you has now expired which is a shame as it had a lot of informaton about ET

Lots of business people buy merchandise and bring it back to sell in their home countries. China is the business destination for consumer goods in these parts. It is much easier to carry it as personal luggage than send it by freight and have to deal with corrupt customs officials and their tons of paperwork.

I don't think so lol US airlines up until the last two years I think it was gave two bags for free at 20-23kg each!! boutt the same.
The only problem for ET pax is when they interline their baggage allowances don't generally carry over, it doesn't matter if ET are operating the first sector and their bags are checked through but when its a return sector and they are the second carrier..... People don't like to be told they could take 30-40kg with them but only 20-30kg home lol

It's probably 90% connecting traffic.

CAN has a huge subsaharan African population, and they fly ET or KQ, since CZ obviously does not have the same African network, and likely never will.
