At about 17:45 local time today (May 27) I saw what I believe to be an MD-11 (2 under wing engines, one in the tail, and a center bogie on the landing gear) arriving into CYWG on runway 18. The colour was pure white, with a small graphic on the tail that I couldn't really see, due to the angle. The approach looked good to me, but the engines were spooling up, and cutting back every few seconds, so either there was a tech issue with the engines, or the pilot was unfamiliar with the area. Another curious fact was at the time, winds were from the north, and a bit gusty (to about 25 km/h). Flightaware currently shows nothing out of the ordinary...

Anyone have any more info on this?

It looks like there was a Kelowna DC-10 that game in from Hamilton around that time...

I'm sure it was one of the following Kelowna Flightcraft DC-10-30 freighters. I' think they serve YWG regularly as a stop between their hub in YHM and YYC.

I'd suspect it was neither of those. I can't speak for the tech issue, but certainly unfamiliarity with an area shouldn't have much bearing on the thrust settings on approach. Approaches are approaches are approaches wherever you go (with a few notable exceptions, but I don't think Winnipeg is a Kai Tak). Again, I'm not qualified to speak for a transport category aircraft, but certainly to the best of my knowledge and experience when you have wind conditions which are gusty, constant power and attitude changes need to be made to maintain the aircraft on approach and on speed. The worst conditions for this are when you are approaching with a tail wind, and as such your ground speed is a little faster, and you have to work a bit harder to keep the aircraft where you want it down to the runway.

I suspect that's your answer...
