Worst air disaster: Tenerife, where 569 were killed I believe in a collision between 2 Pan Am and KLM 747's.

Worst midair: the collision over India involving a Saudi 747 and a Kazah IL-76.

Tenerife-Los Rodeos 1977 I think when a KLM 747 and a Pan Am 747 collided on the runway killing 500+ people I think.

When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!

Tupolev154B2...Thanx for the interesting info on the mid-air collision,...can you just write a little more about it since I have slightly different information on it...ie another scenario

Hello,

I would rate the crash of these two 747s (PAA and KLM) at Tenerife as the worst air disaster and the world´s worst midair collision might probably be the crash of an BEA Trident with a DC-9 of Inex Adria somewhere above the Austrian and Czech border.

I am probably wrong about this, but these accidents came to my mind first.

Well done crew chief32,...you have come up with a quite precise answer (according to my knowledge),...the only difference being that the mid-air collision occured in Northern Croatia,...

take care
Mike

Hello Catpac,

I have to admit that I believe that Tupolew154B2`s answer might be correct as there have been more than 300 victims (I believe 329 have been reported) , when a climbing Saudia 743 crashed into a decending IL-76 of Khazakhstan Airways near Delhi airport.
BTW, the Inex Adria DC-9 was on its way to Cologne, (then) West-Germany, and the Trident went south to Turkey(????).

Yep fair comment,...I have actually done quite a bit of reading on the Inex adria and BAE, but that happened some 20 years ago thats why I replied to the Tupolev dudes post as he claimed it was also that one Saudi 747... and asked him more about it,..cause it was probably the latest one and yes it probably killed more people,...
oh well at the end of the day its a just a qeustion that will not change anyones life..

The collision between the Pan Am 747 and the KLM 747 at Los Rodeos airport on Tenerife in 1977 still ranks as the world's worst civil air accident. However, in 1975 a USAF Lockheed C-5A Galaxy crashed whilst evacuating Vietnamese orphans out of South Vietnam. I don't recall the exact death toll of this accident but it may have been even higher than the Tenerife disaster. Does anyone have the exact total of fatalities?

Trident,

the C-5A crashed on April 4th, 1975 near Saigon but "only" 172 persons have been killed at this accident, mostly Vietnamese people.

The world's worst air disaster was the runway collision in Tenerife between the taxying Pan Am 747-100 and the speeding KLM 747-200, which was on its take-off run. The collision, which occurred in fog at an unusually busy Los Rodeos airport on 27 March 1977, killed 583. There were 77 survivors, all on the Pan Am jet.

The worst mid-air collision occurred in 1995 just outside of New Delhi, India. A Saudi Arabian Airlines 747 climbing out of Delhi's airport collided with a Kazakhstan Airways IL76 which was descending to land. All 349 aboard the 2 planes were killed.
