I was just talking to a friend when he mentioned a cabin fire on a JAL flight. Google returns a few results that indicate a fire broke out shortly before landing at TPE. The flight was a 763 and had 33 pax and 10 crew on board.

A lighter was found in the gap between the seats where the fire broke out. The fire was extinguished by crew.

I'm tired of the A vs. B sniping. Neither make planes that shed wings randomly!

Was this an accident or deliberate? IMHO lighters and such have no place at all in the cabin of an aircraft.

Wow, light load...  Sad

I'm guessing it was accidental. Apparently it was triggered by the seat being returned to the upright position prior to landing.

H1N1 has decimated air travel in Asia, and especially to/from Japan.

Air travel to/from Japan is down about 40% since the swine flu took hold in the country a month ago. People just stopped going there.

I'm at least glad it wasn't on purpose, but does strengthen my point that lighters and matches have no place in an aircraft cabin IMHO.

Wow, that's horrible! Why is that? I thought Japan did not have that big of a problem with H1N1.

There was a glut of cases all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago around Kansai and it just spread.

Cathay has absolutely every promotion on for Japan. You can choose from:
  • more than double Asiamiles (double + 1000) or
  • ultra low fares from US$270 return (Japan is 3-4 hours from Hong Kong depending on where you are going) or
  • packaged deals from US$360 return including 2 nights hotel

Even with these promotions flights are being cancelled. That's how bad it is.

Anyway - back on topic this is the second time recently a lighter has started a fire on a Japanese aircraft. It was ANA a few weeks back.

In Asia, there is still a big fear of a SARS-like outbreak occurring again, and when things like H1N1 pop up anywhere in the world, people fear that is what will happen. Air travel drops dramatically because of fears of contracting any number of illnesses and seeing a repeat of the SARS outbreak.

For those of us that travel Asia frequently, it means nice empty planes with lots of open seats and personal service from the FA's!

I think you have backward. Japanese employers are discouraging people from travelling abroad for fear of catching the flu. That's why traffic is down. It is down on the outbound not the inbound.
