US Airways asks 400 flight attendants for leaves

US Airways (US) is “asking 400 flight attendants to accept voluntary leaves after reductions in seating capacity left it with too many employees,” Bloomberg reported.

US, which expects to trim capacity by 6 percent in 2009, said layoffs would follow if “the leave target isn’t reached,” the story said.

I expect the shoe will drop at UA sometime next week then Sad.

Remember the post I started about the run up in oil and how the industry was not ready to absorb the shock of higher fuel prices and softening demand (?)....this is what I was afraid of  banghead  I hate to be a pessimist, but i fear it will get allot worse before it turns sometime LATE next year....maybe...if we are lucky.

Well, the sad fact is that the "senior momma/poppas" who were planning on hanging it up after 20 or 30 plus years have found themselves in a position where 1) they have a fraction of the pension they had planned on, if at all and 2) their 401k's and stock options & structured savings have been hammered, like everyone else, over the past 18 months.

If inflation takes hold thanks to the trillions of dollars that have been spent in the last six months, it could take a decade or longer for the economy to recover.

I fear that is what is going to happen at WN if not enough people take our buyout. I only have 8 months on the ramp here.

The airlines were looking to dump their pensions as being too costly. The problem this created is it didn't allow the more senior employees who wanted to retire to do so, therefore now the airlines are still paying wages that are topped out and can't replace them due to the seniority issue. Dumping the pensions may be costing the airlines more than say keeping them for the ones who have them, but starting the newcomers on a 401(k).
