I just heard on the news that a Boeing 737's engine broke off after leaving West Palm Beach. I believe the airline was Continental. Nobody was hurt. If you have any more info, please post.

That's why Boeing gives you two engines when you buy a 737. The second is really a spare incase the other one falls off.

yes. it was flight Continental 1933 from PBI to IAH. A piece of the engine casing (?) actually fell onto a road! Nobody was injured and the plane returned to PBI

Does anyone know what series the 737 was or what the registration # was on it?
Thanks for any help.

Well, since you asked.... It was N17356 (fleet #356), a 737-300. As of 2 hours ago, it was still showing to be in PBI. I don't know if the damage to the plane was such that it requires an engine change, if so... it may be stuck there until Floyd has come and gone.

Well, an engine cowling separating in flight is obviously not desirable, but things could be worse...

I vaguely remember an entire engine separating from a 737-200 shortly after takeoff from Chicago (I believe). The plane landed safely shortly thereafter. I remember being amazed that the whole aircraft did not catch fire. Did I dream this, or does anyone else remember hearing about it? It would have been in the early/mid 80's or so. It may have been United. I wonder where the engine landed? That would have been a hell of a sight!

first, rudder problems with 737s. Now engines falling apart. It seems like these jets are quite problem plagued.

Bruce,
737's are not problem plauged. For your information the CFM56-3 is one of the most widely produced turbofans in the civil market with literally thousands of engines in the field. How can the uncontained failure of a CFM56 engine reflect poorly on a 737? Further FYI, there was some speculation they hit a flock of birds. Is that something that only happens to 737's? I couldn't disagree more strongly with your comment.

Bruce,
As a follow up to my previous post (after yours), I think it's important you understand the 737's accident rate is roughly half of the industry standard. Furthermore, when you consider there are literally thousands of them flying, to hear something every few months is not a negative, but in fact is a remarkable testament to the reliability of the aircraft in high cycle daily operations. I fly in 737's happily and without a thought of problems (and I do fly in them often).

When I mentioned that engine separation, I was not trying to launch a debate about the safety of the 737 line. These are isolated incidents which can be attributed to external factors. The 737 and its engines are extremely reliable and I wouldn't have any problem flying in them either. The fact that these planes land safely after such incidents demonstrates their durablity.

Ok...ok, I guess they have more incidents because here's just more of them out there and/or they fly more hours. I have flown on Continental's and USAir's 737-300's and I'm still alive.
