Interesting article in yesterday's UK Sunday Times stating that the entire airline industry is still in a net deficit situation since it was formed. Does this make airlines the worst financial performers of any industry anywhere ever?

Possibly, although passenger railroads have never made much money either. Most seem to be subsidized by their respective governments.
