While I was sitting on my flight from MSP-ORD (in MSP) this past weekend, I saw an Avro sitting on the departure end of the runway and a DC-9 land over it. Correct me if I am wrong, but that isn't exactly legal is it? A month ago, while going into MSP, my flight had to do a go-around because of another aircraft on our runway. Out of all the times I have flown, I have never heard of or seen so many "close calls". None of my friends have either. Is this something that goes on all the time...or is MSP just better known for them?

If what you saw really happened, there was what is called, "a loss of separation". Are you absolutely sure this happened? The reason I ask is because 1. The controller would have instructed a go around and 2. The pilots would not have landed on a runway with an aircraft on it. Are you sure that the aircraft wasn't holding short? oh, and no, this does not happen all the time.

The Avro was on the runway because the DC-9 that I was on was on the hold-short line and yes....I was wondering why the controller didn't tell the DC-9 in the air to go around and if he didn't, why the DC-9 didn't go around. The Avro had a lot of time to takeoff, he was on the runway for a good minute before takeoff.

You must have had one helluva view to see what you are describing... What runway did you use for takeoff?

I'm no MSP expert, but could the avro had been on a parallel runway? Such as 12R/30L or 12L/30R?

I could see the Avro taxi into position and hold from the other side of the plane. Our flight was pretty empty so I had no problems see out the other side. I to thought about the parallel runway and no....it was on the same runway (12L). I saw the Avro on the runway, the DC-9 land and then the Avro took off!
