Dear All,
Turkish Airlines has finally officially confirmed that it will be launching new 3 weekly nonstop flights to Toronto from its Istanbul hub effective July 11th 2009.
TK will be using an Airbus A 330-200 for this nonstop flight flown on MON / THU / SAT.
Flight timings are as follows:
TK 017 Dep IST 1130 Arr YYZ 1540
TK 018 Dep YYZ 2350 Arr IST 1730
These flight timings allow excellent connections in both directions via TK's IST hub to Saudi Arabia, Iran, BOM, DEL, AMM, BEY, CAI, DAM, Central Asia, BKK and GCC (DXB/AUH/DOH).

Has been posted discussed in the Turkish Av. threads already Turkish Aviation June 2009 (by TK787 Jun 2 2009 in Civil Aviation)
The route however realization of 3 year+ venture for THY involving everything from need to draw up a new bilateral between the countries, earlier opposition from Air Canada, and other government to government issues such as a tax treaty etc..
With the final approval that came thru last week from the CTA, THY wasted no time and is launching with mere 3 weeks notice.

I wonder though how they expect to even fill up 60% of their flight from Toronto by giving the market only 3 weeks notice and that too with no aggressive advertising or marketing strategies.
Fares were only loaded in the GDS yesterday afternoon too!
Any idea if AC will be code sharing with them due to the STAR relationship?

The flights likely wont make a profit in the begining, however they TK network folks take a more pragmatic view that any added Toronto traffic will contribute further to the profitability of the remainder of the connecting city pairs.
In other words while the YYZ spoke would loose money on its own, the traffic flow strenghtens the other spokes even further.
Anyhow - TK continues to report strong profits, I'm sure they can manage to carry the any YYZ losses for a bit.
For AC, yes I expect for them to code-share. They just wont respond as fast as THY, so maybe by summer 2010 will have something in place.

Im waiting for TK to launch Lahore with an A 332 or B 738 because flying to LHE will make a lot of money due to the huge Punjabi expat population living in USA, YYZ, UK and Europe.
Fares to LHE are also approximate $ 300 more costly from UK/USA/YYZ compared to BOM/DEL due to lack of competition.

TK has been pushing for Lahore since 2007, but has yet to get the blessing from the Pakistani side.

Also convenient connections to East African destinations, one that definitely rivals Heathrow in terms of connection times. For those of us hitting those destinations from elsewhere in Canada, even a two stopper appears to be palatable based on the timetables.

It all depends on how much traffic exists between IST and YYZ. AC is very prudent it appears: AUH and DXB are not even on their radar while EK for example is hungry for more frequency (but then again, totally markets each serve). Code sharing would be a no-brainer considering TK is in Star.
