Interesting interview with LH CEO Mayrhuber, unfortunately in German only:

http://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/113/474626/text/

Some points:

- No delays in deliveries planned for 2009, but not ruled out after 2010 if the crisis continues.
- Swiss takeover model is scalable in his opinion
- Brand BMI will stay, but not necessarily as a low cost carrier
- Cannot judge today if a merger with Virgin Atlantic would make sense for LH
- MUC has to grow further, satellite terminal and third runway needed. If this is not possible in Munich Zurich and Vienna won't be sad

Another point:

More focus on economy class pax. Pax are moving from the front to the end of the plane and will become more and more important for revenue generating.

Merger of VS and BD, not VS and LH, btw.

between the lines I read a premium economy. Would be a logical step.

Yes bmi baby's days are numbered.......it was stated by Mayrhuber both in this interview and during LH's investor day held on last thursday.

Interesting quote after being asked about possible negative consequences for general demand due to the Air France crash:

Mayrhuber: "People know well that the plane is the safest mean of transport. They will rather ask themselves: Who can I trust in the future?"

Does he want to imply that Air France could lose passengers due to safety concerns?

Most probably he does, which is quite normal.........AF/KL is a major LH competitor in Europe and most ceretainly their safety record is rather questinable after they had 4 crashes in this decade alone.........and an average customer has a full right to ask if there is something going on with AF in terms of safety. Let's not just fool ourselves and blame it on a bed luck.

Apart of that...........Safety and operational exellence are part of LH core values and it is quite normal that Mayrhuber (between the words) is trying to distinguish LH from AF in that respect!

I don't think his comment is aimed at Air France. In my opinion that would be a rather bad style, not typical for him. But I admit it's not clear.

I doubt that, as an engineer he knows that this can happen to his airline as well and that would be a real backfire if he is linked to such a remark. Even if LH would be free from guild in case an accidents happen, the public would not know the difference.

A general rule is, that if something bad happens to a competitor you don't take an advantage out if it

We all know that a crash can happen to any airline - even to those with the highest safety standards. Remember the LH A320 landing attempt at HAM? That was very close.

What is the latest on BMI Regional? Is the regional brand of BMI still expected to be sold to FlyBE?

but having 4 crashes in a single decade is a bit too many and not something that happens to any carriers these days.........maybe in 60's and 70's that would be acceptable but not nowdays

that's why he said it between the lines!
