Yesterday Lufthansa gave a press conference in Milan, with Wolfgang Mayrhuber and the mayor of Milan.

Mayrhuber said Lufthansa Italia has requested ten additional slots for next winter in order to operate new routes from MXP and that they want to increase flights to Europe and Italy.

He also added "we want to become the hub carrier of MXP, our modus operandi consists in proceeding step by step in this operation". "To become a professor, a child first needs to attend elementary school, middle school, high school and university: LH Italia is just born and the objective is becoming professor. We don't want to make excessive promises".

The mayor of Milan said by next December getting to MXP from Milan will take just 25 minutes, with 4 services per hour from Cadorna Station. By the end of the year there should also be a train link from Milan Central Station.

The president of SEA, the operator of MXP and LIN, declared that they will invest 1,4 billions by 2012 to expand MXP and its facilities. LH has also obtained a hangar.

Recently, LH Italia has temporarily reduced some frequencies, justifying the reductions with the low business demand during Summer months. Mayrhuber also said that yields are low, but it's quite normal considering the economic situation.

Sorry for the rough translation from Italian   .

Well maybe we on here can finally get our much wanted MXP-MIA non stop with these new slots for next winter in this first batch of expansion. Sure would compliment LH group MIA services quite nicely!

Don't count on LH Italia starting long haul ops any time soon, I think they are still in elementary school. Let's first if the whole opoeration is still running smoothly thi time next year.

Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight: AMS-FRA-AMS

I think that LH Italia will proceed cautiously with growing the European/Italian domestic network before racing headlong into longhaul services , particularly in the current economic climate. In the short to medium term I think that they will rely on their current and future *A partners to provide the longhaul links , a number of them already have presence at MXP ( TG /SQ /JJ / CO seem obvious candidates to work with )

Can someone give me some light on this matter?

For me the lack of a direct link to Centrale (and the somewhat slow and long ride to Cadorna) was one of Malpensa Achilles heel...

Search for "tunnel di Castellanza".
I found one article, from what I gather that it can be interesting on this matter:
http://www3.varesenews.it/busto/articolo.php?id=135358 (Italian)
But my Italian is very limited so I'm not sure.
This article is also cited in wikipedia:

The link from Milan Central station should be started by the end of the year, but there could be a delay of some months (it will start for sure, the question is when).

Cadorna station is just 1,5 km from the centre of Milan (the Duomo) and is perfect for people working in central Milan.

The Central station is 6 km from the Duomo, it's perfect for people connecting by local (regional) trains from other cities (Lombardy, Piedmont), from Emilia Romagna or people staying in the north zone of the city.
For example, you could take a train from Bologna to Milan Central (1 hour) and then the train to MXP (about 50 minutes from Central station): Bologna is 273 from MXP and a travel time of 2h or 2h30m is not much.

Comparing the travel time from Cadorna (25m) and Centrale (50m) to MXP, I think people directed/staying to/in Milan will use Cadorna, people connecting to other trains will use Centrale.

About time, I remember horrible bus rides.

2 LH A343s were rumored to be given to them soon. I can't wait to see that. I reckon they'll be flying to some Star Alliance hub in the US first.
