Actualy not first by any means.
Over the decades LAX has had nonstops to Havana off and on. TACA operated the service for quite a few years in the early 2000s.

Interesting flight track - do they have to avoid overflying Mexican airspace?

I believe many airlines try to avoid overflying Mexico when the deviation isn't excessive in order to avoid their rather high overflight and ATC charges.

Yup. The CO IAH-HNL is a prime example. Most days when wind/weather cooperates, it follows the US border, crosses the coast at SAN and then goes on to HNL.

It's very different from the Canadian border, where airlines from both countries routinely the other country's airspace on otherwise domestic flights.

About time those nonsensical restrictions were abolished, and great to see air service resuming.

Just curious-- does AA or another carrier offer service from MIA to Havana? That seems more a natural given the short flying distance and Cuban population in S Florida. Any plans to do so? I agree with lifting the embargo, give them a taste of capitalism.

There are dozens of flights that operate between US and Cuba, and have so for a very long time.
I even have a friend that flew on a UA 777 to HAV during the late 90s.

There is no reason to avoid flying over Mexico other than not wanting to pay over flight fees. There are no restrictions between Mexico and Cuba for flights or Canada and Cuba for that matter.

I have flown to Cuba many times and on my ticket there is always a USA overflight fee in the fare and I imagine that this is the same for flying over Mexico.

I doubt they are higher than the Cuban overflight fees.  Wink

There has been no recent changes in air services between the USA and Cuba.

These are charter flights that have been going on for decades. Passengers must be pre-cleared by the USA authorities as complying with USA-Cuba travel restrictions.

Well this did not last long. Last flight is August 11th.

Apparently charterer is pulling the plug.
