Wow, great. Particularly nice to see more development from FCO.

Quoting Kappel (Reply 2): Two new AMS destinations (FCO and MAD), excellent
It's a good day for Dutch low-cost destinations
A bit of history on the routes:
FCO has been the domain of KL and AZ for many years. Since a couple of years both carriers are codesharing on the route and there isn't much competition. Fares are quite high, typically 179 or 189 euros for a round-trip, when booked in advanced, and often with horrible timings.
The last carrier that served AMS-FCO on a low-cost basis was Virgin Express, but this has already been at least 4 years ago, maybe longer.
AMS-MAD has been a battlefield around 2006-2007, when Vueling and Transavia were competing very much on the route. Also IB offered attractive fares at these days.
After Vueling stopped the route, it didn't take long before KLM pulled HV off the route too, and fares when back to the original fare level.
Just before Vueling started AMS-MAD, U2 had already requested slots for the route AMS-MAD but they never started it. Probably as they didn't want to become operator no. 5 on the route. Now it's nice to see them back!
All these new routes from FCO, will it finally become a base now? It is already a night stop destination for 3 aircraft, but it isn't technically a base yet.

Indeed it is, with FR also starting OPO-EIN. Great summary about the history on the FCO and MAD route. Of course FR services Ciampino airport, so there is some competition at the moment to Rome (from the NL), but not on the AMS-FCO route. Very happy to see this, as Rome is still very high on my "to see" list.

I'm pleased to see Porto receive yet another route, and one that I consider to be very important. Hopefully EasyJet will also add Porto-Funchal in the near future also.
Its amazing how many airlines operate the London - Cyprus route and still there is space for more. This will be an excellent boost for the new terminal at PFO where passenger numbers are reduced this year due the economic crisis.

WTF why are they launching LPL-canaries?
Surely they would be better suited to manch and just bring in the 4th aircraft! Better road links, better train links and better bus links?

Funnily enough, some people do actually live in Liverpool. With that argument, I'd say why don't all airlines just fly from London instead of the regions? Better road links, better train links, better bus links....

Great to see the new routes from LTN and finally easyJet are offering routes to people who live north of London and don't want travel round the M25 the opportunity to fly to SSH and PFO which have only been available from LGW until now!
Im sure both routes will be a great success, and as their is limited competition on both routes from other regional airport they could potentially attract independent travellers from the Northern Home Counties, London, East Anglia and the Midlands...
PFO was very successful when Helios Airways, and no one has filled the airlines shoes on this routes since its demise...
Would be great to see some other longer distance routes from LTN to the likes of the Canary Islands as we currently only have ZB's service to TFS at the moment.

I am with Jamotcx on this one. Whilst I never believed in the LPL=Short/City, MAN=Long/Leisure theory that others assumed was the strategy, keeping TFS at MAN and then launching ACE and FUE does seem a but disjointed IMO.

Yup they do and great for them. And its not too bad for most people who like to drive to the airport who dont live closer to manch. But if you live anywhere North or North East of LPL and want to get the train it can be a pain. But not to worry theres plenty of other airlines at manch and london who I could give my money to and not have to bother with having to get to LPL and I'm sure lots of potential passengers willing to fly from LPL but I'm not one of them.

I was under the impression that the A320 carnt make it to SSH from the UK?
It is a long flight for a LCC however as its outside EU EZY could make a small fortune on inflight sales of Duty Free goods... and Drinks/Snacks!
